He had been sick about one year, but for the past few months had been gradually growing worse, his death being caused by bright's disease. Mr. Stegge was born in Wisconsin and came to this county in 1869, and moved to his farm in Lincoln township 18 years ago, where he had since resided. He was married to Miss Mary Sicking before leaving Wisconsin, coming to Pocahontas county soon after. He leaves his wife, three daughters and four sons, besides a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his loss. He was a man of whom no one could speak of but in the highest terms; loved by his family and honored by his neighbors, ever ready to lend a helping hand. Such men as Henry Stegge are the men most missed by the community. The funeral will be held Saturday at ten o'clock from Sacred Heart church, and the remains laid to rest near that of his father and mother in the Catholic cemetery at this place. - - - - - OBITUARY: Pocahontas Democrat, Pocahontas, Iowa on Thursday, April 14th, 1904, pg. 1 An Old Settler Gone. Henry Stegge died at his home in Lincoln township Wednesday morning at 9:45, having been sick since last December, and had suffered considerable the last few years from Bright's disease. Deceased was born November 13, 1855, in Highland, Wisconsin, and settled in Lincoln township in 1869, with his parents, where he has continually resided since, having occupied the present home farm the last eighteen years. At the time of death he was 48 years and five months old. In 1870 he was married to Miss Mary Sicking of Highland, Wisconsin, and to this union seven children were born four boys and three girls all of whom are at home. They are Ben, Henry, Frank and George, Kate, Annie and Mary, who are left with the wife to mourn. Besides the immediate family are four brothers and two sisters, John H., Will, Frank and Mrs. Henry Tucking of Barnesville, Minn., Mrs. Barney Schmaing of St. Cloud, Minn., and B. H. Stegge of Varina. The funeral will be held Saturday at 10 o'clock a. m. in the Sacred Heart church, services to be conducted by Rev. W. A. Pape. The brothers and sisters have all been notified by telegraph and are expected to arrive here Friday. During his long residence in the county, Mr. Stegge had gained a wide acquaintance, and all who knew him had a true friend, and will remember him with a kindly and sympathetic feeling for the bereaved family. Just a few minutes following the death of her father, Miss Kate Stegge was carrying a little brother, and stepping outside of the house slipped and fractured the right ankle joint. Ben Stegge was sick Wednesday, having had to go to bed, but his trouble is only thought to be temporary. Transcribed by Teresa Davis
