Description	:	[photo share by H. Holmes] Henry Benjamin Holmes was born in Virginia about 1866 to Joseph B. and Sophia Holmes. He married Minnie Lee Rodrick (daughter of Elizabeth Jane Sturdy and Jacob H. Rodrick) in 1889. They moved to Newport News, Virginia, in 1897 when he became an agent for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company. After 10 years with them, he became the Tidewater agent for the White Oak Coal Co. Holmes] Henry Benjamin Holmes was born in Virginia about 1866 to Joseph B. and Sophia Holmes. He married Minnie Lee Rodrick (daughter of Elizabeth Jane Sturdy and Jacob H. Rodrick) in 1889. They moved to Newport News, Virginia, in 1897 when he became an agent for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company. After 10 years with them, he became the Tidewater agent for the White Oak Coal Co. Later he managed the affairs of their affiliate C. H. Sprague and Son. In 1913, he joined Furness-Withy and Comany in Newport News, where he remained throughout World War I. Some time after the end of the war, Henry became a manager in their Philadelphia office, and eventually the comptroller of the New York office. He retired around 1938. He was very civic-minded and involved with organizations of the police force, the Newport News Rotarty Club, the Masonic body, and his Presbyterian church. He and Minnie had two sons, Joseph Royston and Henry Benjamin, Jr. Henry, Jr. became a Brigadier General in the Pacific arena in WWII. His son, Henry Benjamin, III, was also in the armed services. Henry Benjamin Holmes, Sr., died in Philadelphia and was buried in Lexington, Virginia. He was buried in the family plot in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery. ______ Minnie and Henry, Sr.'s son Joseph Royston Holmes (1890 - 1949) is under record # 22446518 and his wife Rachel Scott Holmes (1888 - 1960) is under record # 22446502. Joseph and Rachel are buried in St. John's Church Cemetery in Hampton, Virginia. By 1930, they had two daughters, Helen (12) and Cora (10). Helen died in October 1996 and is also buried in St. John's Church Cemetery.
