Read More	Big Timber Pioneer, 25 April 2003 Henry Elgen, 89, a long-time Sweet Grass County resident, passed away April 14, 2003, at the Village Healthcare Center in Missoula. Henry was the son of Peder and Gunhilda Elgen. He was born Mary 6 1914 near Van Hook, North Dakota. His family moved to the family farm near Gerycliff in 1917, and he attended school at the Deer Creek School. Henry served as a sergeant in the U. S. Army, First Armored Division, from 1941 to 1945 during World War II and saw active duty in North Africa and Italy. The name Big Timber, visible on the side of the tank he commanded was chosen in honor of Sgt. Eglen by his crew. He was a Purple Heart recipient and a 50-year member of American Legion Post 19 in Big Timber. On September 3, 1954, he married Jeanne Nicholson Jarrett, and they ranched east of Springdale until 1962 when they moved to Big Timber. Henry was employed as Sweet Grass County road supervisor until his retirement in 1976. An avid outdoorsman, Henry enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. He was an accomplished musician playing several instruments and played in the Big Timber city band. In his youth, he provided music for many local dances with several of his brothers and friends. Henry was a charter member of the Big Timber Rifle and Pistol Club and was a hunter safety instructor for several years. He loved spending time with his family and many friends. Henry was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Philip, Arthur, Benny, Clarence and Oscar; and by his sisters, Nora Omdal, Grave Loveseth, and Helen Braaten. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jeanne; his brothers, Kenneth and Erwin of Bozeman, his children, John Elgen of Great Falls, Connie Jarrett Byrne and husband Jack of Missoula and Monte Jarrett of Big Timber; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services in Big Tomber are pending and will be announced at a later date. Interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery at Big Timber.
