South Bend Journal Friday, May 2, 1924 Funeral Held for Peninsula Pioneer H.H. Tinker Laid To Rest Beside Wife In Baker Cemetery, Was Founder Of Long Beach Funeral services for Harry H. Tinker, Peninsula pioneer, founder of Long Beach and one of the best known men in the county were held last Friday afternoon from the Long Beach Community Church, Rev. Fred L. Pederson officiating. Burial was made in the Baker Cemetery beside the pioneer's wife, who passed away November 5, 1902. The founder of Long Beach was 85 years of age at the time of his death and had been a resident of Pacific County for more than 40 years. His death occurred last Wednesday afternoon after a lingering illness. Mr. Tinker is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Henry Kayler and Mrs. H.E. Deputy; three sons, Gilbert E. Tinker and Harry H. Tinker of Long Beach and George B. Tinker of Kelso. One sister, Mrs. Lena Harding Townsend of Boston also survives. Mr. Tinker was born at Ellsworth, Maine February 12, 1839. He crossed the plains with an ox team at the age of 17 and settled near Sacramento, California where he was employed as cook in a mining camp for several years. Later he moved to Oregon and settled in the Nehalem Valley where he met Frank Canaris, another pioneer of Long Beach. Following this he settled on a timber claim at Clatskanie, Oregon, where he met Miss Nancy Hannah Bryant, whom he married at Marshland on January 22, 1873. In 1880 Mr. Tinker and his family were caught in a big windstorm and fire which devastated the timber in the Clatskanie region. He saved his household goods, which he moved to the Peninsula the following year with his family. He made his first visit to the Peninsula in 1880, when he purchased the Long Beach town site from C.A. Reed, then County Clerk of Pacific County. Oysterville at that time was the county seat. He laid out the town in 1881 and built the first hotel, a 40 room structure in 1883. At first it was a one story structure, but rooms were added as patronage justified. This hotel was destroyed by fire in 1895 and the following year a temporary structure was built. This was eventually remodeled into the present Long Beach Hotel. Mr. Tinker was the first Postmaster of Long Beach and built the fist post office building. This structure was also used as the first school house in Long Beach and until two years ago still stood on the corner of First Street and Pacific Avenue.
