Ilwaco Tribune Friday, January 16, 1959 First Mayor of Long Beach Dies Suddenly on Saturday Gilbert E. Tinker, 79, prominent Long Beach pioneer died Saturday in Ilwaco following a brief illness. Penttila's Chapel by the Sea was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Tinker was born November 4, 1879 at Clatskanie, Oregon coming to the peninsula with his parents at the age of four years. His father had purchased a square mile of land and founded the town of Tinkerville, laying out sites for parks, schools and "barn" lots for the summer visitors. Gilbert saw his father's dream town grow from a wilderness to a well known beach resort community. He attended the first little school, located where the post office now stands and when the town of Long Beach was incorporated, he became its first Mayor. Mr. Tinker served the community in the capacity of a carpenter and also operated cottages fro rent. His civic activities were many in addition to serving as Mayor. He was a Councilman on a number of occasions, was one of the organizers and first Chief of the Long Beach Volunteer Fire Department; a charter member of Redmen Lodge No. 113 and was active in the Chamber of Commerce and Boy Scots. He was an ardent fisherman, beachcomber and weather prophet. Survivors include his widow, Lottie Baker Tinker, to whom he was married September 19, 1902 at the Alfred Baker Ranch on Tarlett Road. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Leonard (Lolita) Morris, Long Beach; two brothers, Harry and George Tinker, Long Beach; one sister, Mrs. Della Deputy, Seattle and one granddaughter, Mrs. Albert Shier, Jr., Seattle.
