Epp was born in Gage County, Nebraska to John (Johannes) and Anna Epp. At the time of the 1910 US Census, the family was farming in Lincoln Township, Gage County. The census lists: John Epp, 36, head, farmer, b. June, 1863 in Germany; imm. 1882 Anna Epp, 28, wife, 4 children, all 4 living, b. Oct. 1871 in Russia, imm. 1883 Margaret Epp, 7, dau, b. Oct. 1893 NE Marie Epp, 5, dau, b. Jan. 1895 NE Henry Epp, 3, son, b. July 1896 NE William Epp, 1, son, b. June 1898 NE Though the family was Mennonite, and most likely pacifist, all the men had to register for the draft. On April 27, 1942, Henry was 46. He was farming in Riverside Township, Gage County, Nebraska. The clerk noted that Henry had blue eyes, gray hair, a ruddy complexion, was 5'9" in height and weighed 200 lbs. He also had a crooked finger on his left hand. He completed 8th grade elementary education--quite an achievement in those days. He would have had to take an examination in Beatrice, the county seat, and the exam was not easy. In 1929, he married Hedwig Penner. The 1930 US Census shows the young couple farming in Riverside Township, Gage County, Nebraska. They had no children at the time. However, the 1940 US Census shows Henry (44) still farming in Riverside Township, Gage County, Nebraska. He was now married to Helen (45), and there were two children, the son and the daughter of Henry (the head of the household, in the US Census, and not his step-children): Harold Epp (9) and Betty (7). Harold would have been born in ~1931, and Betty in ~1933.
