Philip and James Catholic Church, Observing 96 Years of Catholic Faith, 1904-2000, P 171 On May 9, 1881, Henry Promes arrived in America from Germany along with his father, Johann Kalpar "John Caspar" Promes and stepmother, Anna (Didam) Promes. John's first wife, Margaret (Kaiser) died in Germany. John and Anna brought John's children by his first wife to America with them also, settling in Cedar County. Henry Promes and Mary Reuter were married on Aug. 16, 1900 at Bow Valley, NE. They moved to a farm south of St. James, where they lived until their retirement. Upon retirement in 1949, Henry and Mary purchased a home northwest of St. James where they lived until their deaths. Henry died June 26, 1957 and Mary died May 22, 1965. Both are buried in the St. James Church Cemetery.
