Description	:	Henry John Bash was the first child of Christian Bash & Elizabeth George. He was named after his two grandfathers, Henry George and John Bash. He married first on October 14, 1847, in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, to Phebe Rodgers; 3 children: Mary A.E., Lebbeus, and Sherman F. Bash. After 30 years and three children, Phebe divorced Henry on May 26, 1877. He married second on Dec 17, 1877 in Missouri to Mrs. Sarah J. Doty. He divorced her in 1884, and married third on March 9, 1886, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Mrs. Mary (Hurbert) Kelley, a widowed neighbor, who survived him. Henry Bash was a successful farmer. In 1855, he pioneered in central Iowa in what is now Liscomb Twp., Marshall Co., where he built a two-story red brick house that is still standing (though no longer in the family). When he died in 1900, he was "one of Marshall County's most wealthy farmers," owning 720 acres in Marshall County, land in adjacent Grundy County to the north, and houses and a hotel in Conrad, Iowa, plus farms in Pocahontas County, Iowa. His wealth was estimated at between $80,000 and $100,000. It would have been higher, but Henry was one of the owners of Commercial Bank, a Marshalltown bank that failed. Being a man of integrity, Henry made all the deposits good out of his own pocket ($28,000 cash). The 1912 Marshall County history mentions Henry was one of the early settlers successful in raising apples. Henry died intestate--without a will--so his estate was divided into thirds. One third went to his widow Mary. One third went to his son Lebbeus. One third would have gone to his daughter Mary Clark, but she died before the estate was settled, so her third went to her two sons, Sherman and Roy--each getting about $15,000--a lot of money in those days! Henry is buried beside Phebe, the first of his three wives. His third wife and widow, Mary, was born in March 1838 in Ireland. In 1863 she immigrated to New York with her first husband, Anthony Kelley, and their first three children: Patrick H. (1859-1890), Maria (1860-1870), and William (1862- ). Mary died in 1905 and is buried at Riverside beside her first husband, Anthony Kelley, and their first two children. The first photo---a carte de visite---is the earliest portrait we have of Henry J. Bash; probably taken in the 1860s. The later photo shows a white-haired and white-bearded Henry in front of his brick farmhouse, with his third wife, Mary Kelley, and two of her six children: John and Kate* Kelley. The house faces south, on a side road right off state highway #14. The dinner bell mounted higher than the roof peak is long gone. It was mounted that high so it could be heard from fields in all directions. Please click on the photos to view larger versions of them. August 2012 UPDATE: Henry's red brick farmhouse has been torn down. A local landmark exists no more. Sarah Maulsby, born 1839 in Indiana, was married first in 1863 to Theodore Doty and had one daughter: Blanche Estella, born 1867 in Iowa; died 19 April 1936; called Stella in the 1880 census. Sarah died in 1906 at the Marshall County Poor Farm; likely buried there. Blanche married 1 March 1886 to William James Horner (1861-1945); 7 children. *Kate Kelley married 23 December 1897 to Oliver M. Richardson (1861-1932); son Harold. Kate had an older sister, Bessie, born 1864 in New York; married 7 January 1893 to Myles Kelleher (born 1853 in Ireland). Living with them in the 5 June 1900 census of 209 West Church Street, Marshalltown, Iowa, were Bessie's widowed mother, Mary Bash, 62, and Bessie's younger bachelor brother, John Kelley, 26, a farmer. Johnny Kelley played baseball in his youth and boasted he pitched a fast curve ball. His stepfather Henry Bash challenged him to prove it. About 1890 at the Bash farm north of Marshalltown, Iowa, Henry stood behind one end of his barn and stuck his head around the corner to watch Johnny pitch the baseball at him from the other end of the barn. The fast curve ball hit Henry in the forehead and knocked him unconscious. Luckily, he survived. Asked if the ball curved, Henry replied, "How the hell would I know, it came at me so damned fast!" Both Johnny & Henry are in the Bash farmhouse photo at left, along with Johnny's mother Mary and his little sister Kate.
