Description	:	Martha Magdalena Bash was the eldest daughter of Christian Bash & Elizabeth George. She went by her middle name, which was the name of her paternal grandmother, Magdalena Lauffer Bash (1770-1837). (She was also called Aunt Mary by her nieces and nephews. The 1910 Nebraska census also calls her Mary.) As a child, she moved in the 1830s with her parents and siblings from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, northwest to Mercer County, Pennsylvania. There, she was married on 30 Dec 1847 to James Pettycrew; he was born about 1825 in Pennsylvania. About 1855, James and Magdalena and their young children migrated west to central Iowa. They traveled in a covered wagon pulled by oxen. No bridges spanned the mighty Mississippi River, so they paid to be ferried across the deep water. They farmed north of Marshalltown, near her siblings, Henry J. Bash, Israel Bash, and Maria Bash Coulter and their families. In the late 1860s, the Pettycrew family moved to Phelps County, Missouri, where James owned a farm. James and Magdalena had 11 children: infant son died 5 Sept 1849, buried Unity Presbyterian Cemetery, Lackawannock Twp., Mercer Co., PA, Sec. 2, Row 5. George W. died young in May 1865 James E. 1852-1940 William A. 1855-1934 Robert Fisher 1857-1933 Mary M. died young 4 Jan 1868 Katherine E. died young Sept 1864 Rosetta "Rosa", born 1863 in Iowa; m. 19 Aug 1882 in Marshall Co., IA, to C.R. Choate; Rosa died before 1912 Ulysses Simpson Grant, who went by Grant, 1865-1951 Amanda A., born 1867 in Iowa; died 1960 Cynthia M., born 1870 in Missouri; died after 1912 Magdalena Pettycrew divorced her husband James in 1882. (He may be the James Pettycrew, age 62 years and 9 months, who died 7 Jan 1888 in Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa, of rheumatism of the heart, and is buried there in Riverside Cemetery, section 3, lot 145.) Magdalena moved to Cherry County, Nebraska with several of her sons and their families. There, she married on 6 Oct 1892 in Valentine, NE, to Daniel Hubbard. He was born 26 Aug 1831 in Holden, Worchester County, MA; died 19 Nov 1911 in Valentine, Cherry County, NE. During the Civil War, Daniel served in Company E, 9th Illinois Infantry. Magdalena's newspaper obituary: "Magdalena Bash was born in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, December 8, 1828, was married to James Pettycrew on December 30, 1847. Moved to central Iowa, in 1855 and has spent the remaining years of her life in Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska, living in Cherry county (Nebraska) nearly 29 years. To this union were born six sons and five daughters of which four sons and two daughters survive their mother, who died October 29, 1912, aged 83 years, 10 months and 20 days. Those of the children present during her last hours were J. E. Pettycrew, of Salem, Oregon, W. A. and R. F. of Valentine and Cynthia M., of St. Paul, Minnesota. The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Frank Sutton, at the M.E. church Thursday morning, October 31. The remains were laid to rest in Mount Hope cemetery.(Section B, lot 45, sub 8) (The Republican, Valentine, NE - Friday, November 1, 1912)" Magdalena was buried in the same lot as her daughter-in-law Adelia, who died in 1903. Adelia was the wife of William A. Pettycrew.
