Lucas was born in Clay County, Indiana, August 21, 1840, and died at his home at Woonsocket, South Dakota, September 23, 1922, at the age of 82 years, 1 month and 2 days. His parents were natives of Kentucky. With them he emigrated to Boone County, Iowa in 1853. At the age of 21 he took up the teaching profession and has taught over one hundred terms of school in Boone and Hamilton counties. Early in his teaching experience he became a member of the North Border Brigade, stationed at Spirit Lake, which was organized following the Indian massacre there. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Hook, May 24, 1866 and to this union was born five children, Mrs. Oscar Brewer, Alva, Guy and Hal of Woonsocket, South Dakota and Mrs. G.A. Near, of Boone, Iowa, all of whom survive the death of the father and husband. Other living relatives are one brother and four sisters. Mr. Lucas resided on a farm about one and one-half miles west of Stanhope, Iowa, until about twenty years ago when he and his family moved to South Dakota, and located at Woonsocket. The deceased was a kind and loving husband and father, a faithful member of the Church of God, and an honored and respected citizen. His neighbors loved him for his uprightness and strength of character. He was a very patient sufferer until the end, during his long period of sickness of paralysis. The funeral was held from the M.E. Church at Stratford, Iowa, Tuesday, September 26, where the body was shipped for burial. J.W. Williams, of the Church of God, of Belle Plaine, had charge of the services. Following the funeral services he was laid to rest in the Oakwood Cemetery north of Stratford to await the coming of Christ, when he shall awake the dead from their sleep. Lucas was born in Clay county, Indiana, August 21, 1840 and passed away at his home near Woonsocket, S.D., Sept. 23, 1922, aged 82 years, 1 month, 2 days. His parents were natives of Kentucky and with them he emigrated to Boone county, Iowa in 1853. When 21 years old he took up school teaching as a profession and taught more than one hundred terms of school in Boone and Hamilton counties. Early in his life he became a member of the North Border Brigade, stationed at Spirit Lake, which was organized following Indian massacres. He was married to Miss Mary Hook May 24, 1866 and five children were born to them. The children are: Mrs. Oscar Brewer, Alva, Guy and Hal of Woonsocket, S.D., and Mrs. G.A. Near of Boone, Ia., all of whom survive the death of the father and husband. One brother and four sisters also survive. For many years deceased resided on a farm about 7 miles northeast of this place. Twenty years ago he moved to Woonsocket with his family and has since resided there. During the years of his residence here he was a very kind and loving husband and father, a faithful member of the Church of God and an honored and respected citizen. He was well known for his honesty, uprightness and real strength of character. A while before his death he was stricken with paralysis and was a patient sufferer for a long period. The remains were shipped to this place for burial and the funeral services were held at the M.E. church here Tuesday forenoon, Sept. 26, 1922 conducted by Rev. J.W. Williams of Belle Plaine. The remains were placed in the Oakwood cemetery. Those from out of town who were present at the funeral services were: Mrs. H.M. Lucas, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Lucas, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Brewer, Mr. and Mrs. Hal Lucas, and Alva Lucas, all of Woonsocket, S.D.; G.A. Near and wife, and Mrs. S.S. Smith, of Boone; Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Peterson, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Iles and Mrs. John Martin, all of Des Moines; C.L. Lucas, Guy and Dudley Lucas, and wives, of Madrid; Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Hook of Lake Wilson, Minn.; J. Will Hook of Jamesport, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. Baird Pringle of Early. Card of Thanks We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to our old neighbors and friends for their kindness to us; to Rev. F.W. Stratford Courier October 12, 1922 In Memoriam to H.M. Lucas Slowly and surely as day follows day, From this beautiful world, we are passing away. Henry M. Lucas, a pioneer settler of Iowa, is numbered now amongst the absent. Incidents of a life well spent come back to us through a sea of memory. Time cannot erase the many deeds of kindness and love to rich and poor, which his every action wrought. Mr. Lucas was one of the first schoolmasters in this vicinity and many there are hereabouts who can recall those days when he was the inspiratier and worthiness to those within his teaching sphere. He was a man who played well his part, for never was a snow drift too deep nor a storm too severe but that he was always first to the school building to welcome his pupils at the door with a kindly smile and an encouraging nod. How well we remember his guiding influence which helped many a boy and girl, now grown to manhood and womanhood, over the rough places in school life and out. The rapid upbuilding of this country is largely due to such men as he. His ideals were of the highest and his outlook upon the future ages were of the loftiest. The influence of his teachings still remains with the gray haired men and women of today and all who knew him, weep for him. Well might one take note of his optimistic views for he was fully satisfied with life and what it gave. He loved his country, her institutions and his fellow men. He always stood ready to show his patriotism. If oppressive legislation infringed upon the rights of others, he was amongst those to declaim it for he was a man of character. His views were purely democratic and honesty was his guide for he was an honest man. Death has taken his presence from amongst us but Time can never erase the deep imprint his life has been upon the sands of time. As the glory of the autumn with the ripening of the leaves, Marks the ending of the harvest and the binding of the sheaves; So there seemed a fitting beauty in the glory of the day, That marked the peaceful ending on the life that's passed away.
