Read More	s/Bernard & Agnes Macke Osterhaus The Courier-Tribune, Thursday, February 5, 1953 Henry Osterhaus was born at Osterfeine, Germany, on March 8, 1863, and came to this country and to Nemaha County when he was twenty, and in this county lived the seventy remaining years of his life. He became a substantial farmer, raised a good family. He retired from active work about twenty years ago, continuing to live on the old home place and making his home with a son, Henry Jr., and enjoying good health until about four years ago, when he was well in his eighties. He was married at St. Marys Church, St. Benedict, on Feburary. 8, 1887, to Bernadine Rottinghaus. She passed way on October 12, 1931. Their children are Mary, Mrs. Frank Deters, and Elizabeth, Mrs. August Wessel, Baileyville; Rose, Mrs. Barney Wessel, Wetmore; Barney Osterhaus of Seneca; Dora, Mrs. Barney Wilberding of Seneca; Hilda, Mrs. Albert Mathewson of Baileyville; Henry Jr. of north of Seneca; Alvina , Mrs. Hubert Halfen of Kansas City; and Anna, Mrs. Henry Ronnebaum of Kansas City. Mr. Osterhaus was the eldest of his family. He has one sister living in Germany. The late Bernard Osterhaus, Seneca and the late Frank Osterhaus, Marysville, were brothers, and two sisters who remained in Germany are deceased. He leaves 63 grandchildren and 64 great-grandchildren. The funeral was held at 8:30 Tuesday morning at St. Marys Church, St. Benedict, and burial was at the parish cemetery. The active pallbearers were Edward Deters, Henry Wessel, Leonard Osterhaus, Clinton Halfen, Cletus Ronnebaum and Robert Osterhaus, nephews, and honorary pallbearers were neighbors, Ray Rilinger, Ben Rottinghaus, George Rilinger, Wilbur Heiniger, Clem Sudbeck and Frank Heiman. ********** Birthplace explained: His obituary cited Osterfeine, an obscure place, but which was in Lower Saxony, maybe a church village or an estate name, since re-named. In one of his Censuses, he gave his birthplace as Oldenburg. The Oldenburg region was also in Lower Saxony, so may have been the location of Osterfeine.
