Description	:	Henry William Frederick Schwanke was born to his loving parents Christian Friedrich "Christ" and Marie Albertina (Metschke) Schwanke on Saturday October 8, 1898. The 1910 census shows Henry's family living at Colfax County Stanton Township Nebraska when he was born. His grandson says he was born near Howells per Henry's daughter's birth certificate, plus the certificate listed two middle names of William Frederick. Read More	Henry William Frederick Schwanke was born to his loving parents Christian Friedrich "Christ" and Marie Albertina (Metschke) Schwanke on Saturday October 8, 1898. The 1910 census shows Henry's family living at Colfax County Stanton Township Nebraska when he was born. His grandson says he was born near Howells per Henry's daughter's birth certificate, plus the certificate listed two middle names of William Frederick. There were actually eleven children in his family, since it is believed his mother's first children were a set of twin girls. The girls died at birth, sadly there are no records of the twin's names nor where they were buried. Henry had five brothers and five sisters counting the twin sisters that passed. Henry also had a set of living twin sisters too. Henry was raised on a rural farm south southwest of Leigh, Platte County Nebraska with a GPS of 41.654460, -97.272033. In 1927 Henry was living with his sister Ida on a farm ten miles south of Scribner, Dodge County with the GPS of 41.540971, -96.664389. On Sunday morning September 4th two houses burned to the ground after they had left to visit their parents. A nine year old house and a house that I believe probably was the house that was used before the new home. Henry and his sister lost all their belongings. The house had originally cost $15,000 to build in 1918, when they rebuilt they used the same foundation with less expense materials. Henry's folks had purchased that farm in February of 1927. Henry was united in marriage to Gladys Dickerson on Wednesday May 29, 1929 at the St. Peter Lutheran Church of Scribner at 1p by the Rev. G. W. Lobeck. The bride Gladys was gowned in white with a long veil, she carried a bouquet of roses and sweet peas. Henry the groom wore a dark suit, he was regarded by those who knew him as an ambitious and worthy young man. The couple was blessed with a daughter and a son over their years of marriage. The couple lived first on the farm ten miles south of Scribner. On Wednesday January 15, 1936 Henry and Gladys purchased an eighty acre Snyder, Dodge County farm for $115.60 per acre for a total cost of $9,250. Henry and Gladys moved to this farm which was southwest of Snyder with the GPS of 41.667195, -96.840337 and in later years purchased more joining acres. Henry farmed and Gladys was a school teacher, they were members of St. Peters Lutheran of Snyder. Henry and Gladys observed their Silver Wedding Anniversary Saturday evening May 29, 1954 at their Snyder home. The following Sunday afternoon the celebration continued with many relatives gathering at their home playing bingo and pinochle. A lovely bouquet of flowers, gifts and cards were received with everyone enjoying a piece of anniversary cake baked by their daughter Verna. I recall visiting the Snyder farm as a young boy, I played in their corn cob storage bin. I too recall being at the Scribner Co-op with my father in the fifties and Henry was refiguring his bill with them. Henry was a good businessman. Henry's grandson Bob recalls going to Scribner with his Grandpa Henry. Grandpa would have a barley pop and he would purchase an orange pop for Bob. Grandpa would say to Bob not to mention the two pops they had to Grandma Gladys. Henry's main tractors were a Massey Harris 33 and a 44. I helped Henry once when I was a young man stacking hay in his field. Henry used a hay field sweep to push the hay onto a stacker. The stacker then lifted the hay onto the stack where we leveled the hay with pitchforks. Over the years on Memorial Day Henry and Gladys would always travel to their parent's graves to place flowers. I recall Henry and Gladys family cars, a 1954 Chevy Bel-Air two tone blue which they passed to their son four years later after they purchased a 1958 Ford two tone blue. I believe they liked the color blue for their family car. Later they traded for a 1962 Rambler which too was a medium blue. Henry and Gladys retired from the farm to Fremont in 1959. They built a new home which was just west of the Plumb Field Nursery grounds at the time. The address was 810 West 21st Street with the GPS of 41.449301, -96.506786. They were owner managers of a couple of homes west of their home plus three duplexes in the City of Fremont. They did custodian work too. I recall visiting them in the earlier sixties, Gladys always kept a nice home and the couple enjoyed raising a big garden too. On Sunday April 15, 1973 while hospitalized at the Fremont Dodge County Hospital Henry sadly passed from a lengthy illness of cancer at the age of 74 years, 6 months, 7 days which does not include his last day, he lived a total of 27,217 days. Henry's funeral service was held at Trinity Lutheran Church of Fremont where he was a member on Wednesday April 18, 1973 at 2p with Rev. Glenn Kalthoff officiating. Moser Memorial Chapel of Fremont was in charge of his arrangements. Henry was interred in Memorial Cemetery of Fremont in Section F, Lot 77A, Grave 3.
