Description	:	Hermann John Schwanke was born to his loving parents Christian Friedrich "Christ" and Marie Albertina (Metschke) Schwanke on Sunday September 29, 1895. Hermann's draft registration shows he was born at Howells, Colfax County Nebraska. My research found no information of Hermann's childhood or schooling. There were actually eleven children in his family, since it is believed his mother's first children were a set of twin girls. Hermann's draft registration shows he was born at Howells, Colfax County Nebraska. My research found no information of Hermann's childhood or schooling. There were actually eleven children in his family, since it is believed his mother's first children were a set of twin girls. The girls died at birth, sadly there are no records of the twin's names nor where they were buried. Hermann had five brothers and five sisters counting the twin sisters that passed. Hermann also had a set of living twin sisters too. The 1900 and 1910 Census shows Hermann living at Stanton Township, Colfax County which in 1908 a rifle he was handling accidentally discharged shooting him in the palm and exiting by his wrist. Hermann's June 1917 draft registration shows his address as rural route four Scribner, Dodge County where he was employed as a farm hand for August Metschke. Hermann served in the US Army, his gravestone says "NEBRASKA PVT 4 CO 164 DEPOT BRIGADE WORLD WAR I". The 1920 Census showed him living at Platte County and on Thursday May 14, 1925 Hermann was united in marriage to Anna Lusinda Menke at Leigh, Colfax County. The couple were blessed with two sons and a daughter during their years of marriage. The 1930 shows Colfax County and he was a farmer. The 1935 shows Platte County and he was a road builder shoveling grounds. In March of 1936 Hermann leased the Redmond Phillips 66 a gasoline service station along Highway 8 near Fremont, Dodge County, he operated this station for a year and around that time moved his family from Columbus, Platte County to 533 West South Street on the south side of Fremont. The 1940 census does show Dodge County. I do recall visiting Hermann and Anna at their Fremont Home as a young boy. Hermann was employed at the Jerpe's Chicken & Egg Plant which later became Swanson Foods. Hermann was later employed at the Mead Ordnance Plant at Saunders County as a security guard. This plant produced weapons from 1942-45 after which the Army used it as a bomb factory during the Vietnam War. Sadly Wednesday November 2, 1955 Herman passed at the age of 60 years, 1 month, 4 days which does not include his last day, he lived a total of 21,948 days. I recall my folks paying their respect that evening, Hermann was just lying peacefully on a gurney, he was the first passed person I ever viewed. Hermann's funeral service was held on Friday November 4, 1955 at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Fremont at 2p. Lattin & Dugan Funeral Home was in charge of his arrangements. Hermann was interred at the Memorial Cemetery of Fremont in section f, lot 63, grave 5. Hermann's information was provided from researching many resources and my memory. This biography was created as an honor to my uncle Hermann by Loren R. I believe all lives matter, even the lives of those who have passed.
