One of Nance county's early settlers, Mr. Hodges died the preceding Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ed Crouse, near Belgrade, following a long illness. Mr. Hodges came to Nebraska from Michigan with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hodges in 1872 at the age of four. Nance county was still an Indian Reservation at the time. The Hodges occupied the first soddy built between Fullerton and Belgrade. The post office was located in the Hodge's soddy before nearby towns were laid out. Survivors include his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Nellie Crouse and Mrs. Stella Main of Belgrade and Mrs. Paul McVickers of Abilene, TX, and one son Herbert Hodges, Jr., of Alaska. 1949 Copies of handwritten notes of Norrine Caswell. clipping from a Newspaper. HERBERT HODGES Herbert Hodges, Sr., of Fullerton died April 23 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ed Crouse , near Belgrade, after a long illness. Mr. Hodges was 80 at the time of his death and one of Nance County's earliest settlers. He came to Nebraska with his parents in 1872 at the age of four, while the Nance county area was still an Indian reservation and when clashes between the Pawnee and Sioux were common occurrences. The Hodges family occupied the first sod house built in the county, about half-way between Fullerton and Belgrade. The first post office was named Tekomsho and was located in this house before some of the nearby towns were laid out. Mail was carried from Central City to Tekomsho, Red Wing, Mira (which is now Belgrade), and then on to Oakdale. In 1893 he was married to Lillie Vosburgh at Belgrade. The deceased is survived by his wife; one son, Herbert Hodges, Jr., of Fairbanks, Alaska; and three daughters, Mrs. Ed Crouse and Mrs. Ralph Main of Belgrade and Mrs. Ross McVicker of El Paso, Texas; Thirteen grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren also survive him. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Methodist church in Fullerton, with Rev. D. E. Cannaday officiating
