He was born Oct. 1, 1906, in Reagan, Neb., the son of William M. and Pearl F. Gustus Sandstead, moving to southwest of Willard in 1910 where he received his education, was an outstanding prep athlete and graduated from Willard High School in 1927. He was one of the first Logan County 4-H Club members. Mr. Sandstead began working in grocery stores at Gimmell's Store in Willard and Safeway Stores in Sterling and Fort Collins. He moved to Ft. Collins in 1930 where he married Della McBride in Ft. Collins in 1934. He later became manager of Safeway Store in Burlington, later at Holyoke. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 until being dis charged in 1945, returning to Holyoke where he operated Sandy's Appliances and Komac Paint, until retiring in 1980. Mrs. Sandstead died in 1963 and on May 12, 1965, Mr. Sandstead married Cora Calhoun Smith in Sterling. The couple traveled extensively in Germany, Spain, Alaska, and Hawaii. Mr. Sandstead served on the Holyoke City Council, was a member of the Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department, Phillips County Service Officer, defensive driver instructor and an avid fisherman and enjoyed boating. He was assistant state director of American Association of Retired Persons, and recently returned from the National AARP Convention in San Diego, Calif. Mr. Sandstead was a member of the United Methodist Church of Holyoke, Sterling B.P.O.Elks Lodge No. 1336, charter member of the Holyoke Lions Club, a member of the American Legion, Senior Citizens and AARP. He is survived by his wife, Cora Sandstead of Holyoke; two step-sons, Eugene Smith of San Antonio, Texas, and Clifford Smith of Chino Hills, Calif.; three brothers, Morris Sandstead and Willard Sandstead, both of Sterling, and Earl Sandstead of Willard; four sisters, Helen Budin and Arlene Spangler, both of Sterl ng, Evelyn Osborne of Broomfield,and Virginia Wood of Seattle,Wash.; four step-grandchildren; and11 step-great-grandchildren.
