Arrangements were made by Chancy Reager Funeral Home. Moe, as he was known to most people in Northeast Colorado, was born in Sterling on Sept. 25, 1910. He was the third of eight children, and the first to be born in a hospital, to William Morris and Pearl T. Gustus Sandstead. The family had established a homestead near Willard a few years earlier, having come from Holdrege, Neb. and Sweden. Moe was a dryland wheat farmer, though he tried many other crops during his long life on the farm. He was a man of the farm, the football field, and the basketball court. Moe never concealed the few sorrows of his long life or his unbelievable and unswerving joy of living. He was a school teacher and coach for 42 years in Colorado, having taught in Fleming, Peetz, Merino, Akron and Yuma. He taught from 1952 to 1976 in Sterling, the school from which he graduated in 1929. He had played football at Colorado A&M and received a degree in economics there. Moe married Anon Downey, who died in 1943. In 1948 he married Vivian Lorene Hoover, to whom he was married until her death in February 2000. In addition to teaching and coaching, Moe was a crop insurance adjuster, auctioneer, football and basketball referee, sometime gambler, trickster, jokester, and otherwise gainfully and not gainfully engaged lover of life and work. He truly believed that to live meant "to be aware, joyously, serenely, divinely, aware." Moe is survived by his daughter, Cherie Haas and her husband and four children; his son, Morris William Sandstead Jr. and his wife and two children. Also surviving are three sisters, Helen Budin of Sterling, Virginia Wood of Renton, Wash., and Evelyn Osborne of Broomfield; and one brother, Willard Sandstead of Sterling and Cape Coral, Fla. The grandchildren are Lisa Haas and Shawn Haas, both of Greeley, Tara Hettinger of Merino, Madra Haas of Phoenix, Rebecca Sandstead of Washington, D.C., and Martha Sandstead of Eugene, Ore. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Herbert of Holyoke, and Earl "Bud" of Willard; and one sister, Alene Spangler of Sterling. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Rocky Mountain chapter or to a charity of the donor's choice.
