Koors, 70, one of the best known farmers and stockmen in the county and nationally known as a tomato grower, died at his home northeast of Tipton Monday night, death occurring about 10:15 after an illness of nine days with pneumonia. Mr. Koors, who was three times tomato king of this county, and twice tomato king of Indiana, in 1930 and 1931, produced a yield in 1930 which attracted national, attention. Mr. Koors, who was three times tomato king of this county, and twice tomato king of Indiana, in 1930 and 1931, produced a yield in 1930 which attracted national, attention. On a patch of ground containing 5.6 acres he produced an average of 23.78 tons to the acre, the largest yield ever produced in the county or state and one which has not been equaled since. The death of this man removes from the county one of its most industrious and careful farmers and one of its upright citizens. who did much to bring credit to the county. About 4 weeks ago, Mr. Koors met with an met with an accident, falling from a wagon when a team started unexpectedly and he suffered a broken collar bone. This was the start of his illness. While nursing that injury he suffered an attack of flu which ran into pneumonia and for the past nine days, despite the best of medical attention, he gradually failed. For some time he had been taking oxygen but the disease could not be checked. Herman G. Koors, was born in Decatur county August 18, 1862. His parents were Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (Rachel) Koors. He was married at Milhausen to, Miss Rebecca Funke, the daughter of John T. and Josephine (Welden) Funke, of that county. They resided in Decatur county until 1887, when he and his wife came here. The family lived here one year, removing to Howard county and then came back to this county in 1902. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Koors, the widow and the children surviving. The children are Mrs. Valentine Jung of Tipton; Bernard Koors,Mrs. Josephine Altherr, widow of Frank Altherr, Mrs. Andy Altherr, John and Mrs. James Parr, all residing east of Tipton; Herman Jr. and Loretta at home, and Rev. Clemens Koors of Whiting.
