March 1, 1910 - Carroll Sentinel - Thursday evening Herman Hesslingh died at his home in the first ward of this city after a brief illness of a few days. He contracted a cold a couple of weeks ago but was able to be up and around until about two days prior to his death when symptoms of pneumonia developed and rapidly made progress. It baffled all medical skill and from the first the patient rapidly failed. It was not thought that he was in so serious condition as he was even a short time prior to his death. For some time he had been failing and when pneumonia developed his constitution was in so weakened a condition that he fell an easy victim to its ravages. Herman Hesslingh was born in Wener Ostfriesen, Germany in 1837. In 1865 he came with his parents to this country and settled at Forrest City, Illinois, where he lived until 1871. That year he was united in marriage to Miss Jessie Johnson of that place and then moved west to Carroll county where they located on a farm in Grant township. There they resided until in 1902 when he and his wife moved to this city and have since lived a quiet and retired life. To this union there were born seven children, six of whom are still living. They are: George, of Manning; Mrs, Winnie Noble, of Carroll township; Herman, who lives on the old homestead; John, of Grant township; and Mrs. Kate Farrell, who is living with her parents. All the children are married and are pleasantly located and are succeding in life. This was one of the fondest desires of the father that his children would become good and useful citizens. It must have been gratifying to him to know that his wish in this respect was being carried out to his entire satisfaction. During the years that the deceased was among us he succeeded in life and won the good will and respect of all with whom he came in contact. He was an ideal citizen generous to a fault, kind and gentle to his wife and family and always held their welfare uppermost in his every day life. He was an honest and industrious man who succeeded by his efforts in accumulating his share of this world's goods and for a number of years had rested from his labors. He was a member of the Church of God and was one of its most devout and consistent members. The aged mother is active and well preserved for one of her years and apparently will live for a number of years as a comfort and solace to her children who are affectionately attached to their parents. The funeral was held from the house Saturday afternoon at 1:30 and the services were under the charge of Rev. Elliott of the Church of God assisted by Rev. Everds of the Presbyterian church. It is the desire of the wife and children to extend their thanks to the kind neighbors and friends who were so generous in assisting them during the death and burial of their kind and loving husband and father.
