Description	:	Herman Anthony Scholten, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerhard Scholten, was born December 9, 1862 and Zutphen, Gelderland, the Netherlands. He passed away very suddenly at noon November 12, 1946, at the age of 83 years. Mr. Scholten came to America in the spring of 1871 with his parents, a sister, and brothers. He remembered the Chicago fire very distinctly, which occurred in the fall of 1871. One brother died the following spring as a result of the fire. Mr. Scholten came to Sioux County in 1883, at the age of twenty, and he lived int he Alton vicinity since that time. He married Anne Menning February 28, 1889. Four children were born to this union, Anne (Mrs. Henry O. Langstraat) of Sheldon, Abbie (Mrs. Evert Geurink) of Orange City, Grace (Mrs. August De Boer) and Simon Scholten, both of Alton. Mrs. Scholten died in February, 1900. On July 9, 1903 he married Nellie Den Hartog. Seven children were born to this union, Jeanette (Mrs. Ray Riedeman) of Orange City, the twins, Minnie and Margaret, Gerald, and John at home, Bernice (Mrs. Arie Jasper) of Orange City, and Nelvina at home. Surviving are the widow and all the children, 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also a sister, Mrs. C. Wissink, and a brother, William Scholten, both of Orange City. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John in 1912 and Henry in 1939. Mr. Scholten was a member of the Alton Reformed Church for over 60 years. He served as elder and Sunday School teacher for many years, and also taught catechism for many years in rural schools. Funeral services were held at the home and at the Alton Reformed Church, Friday, November 15, with Rev. H. Hesselink officiating. Burial was in Nassau Township Cemetery. Pall bearers were grandchildren, William Geurink, Harold Geurink, and Dick Te Brink, all of Orange City, Herman Langstraat and Lester Langstraat of Sheldon, and Lewis Furda of Paullina.
