Description	:	Homer Luke Blain was born January 20, 1910 at Creighton, Nebraska, to Charlie and Ellen Blain and departed from this life on September 2, 1988 at the age of 78 yeras, 9 months and thirteen days. He started his education at Creighton and finished elementary school at Middlebranch School northeast of Page. He attended high school at Faith Bible School in Tabor, Iowa. Read More	Homer Luke Blain was born January 20, 1910 at Creighton, Nebraska, to Charlie and Ellen Blain and departed from this life on September 2, 1988 at the age of 78 yeras, 9 months and thirteen days. He started his education at Creighton and finished elementary school at Middlebranch School northeast of Page. He attended high school at Faith Bible School in Tabor, Iowa. He returned to his parents home to help his aging parents on the farm because of difficult finances during the late thirties. Home worked at the family farm until his enlistment in the Army on April 3, 1942 at Grand Island, NE where he served for 33 months. He was with the anti-aircraft artillery stationed in the Aleutian Islands from June 42 to August of '43. He was stationed in Texas at Camp Bowie and discharged from Ft. Leavenworth, KS, returning home on Nov. 27, 1944. He married Ruth E. Anson on Feb. 23, 1945 at the home of her parents west of Orchard. They farmed near Middlebranch for 3 1/2 years before moving to Oklahoma where they farmed for about 5 years. Because of Homer's severe back injury, they returned to Nebraska where he underwent back surgery in the VA Hospital in Grand Island, in March of 1954. After he took 2 years of education at Wayne State College he graduated with a teacher's certificate. He taught school for a brief time, then returned to the farm work which he loved so much. He worked in several northeast and north central Nebraska communities before returning to Orchard in the spring of 1963 whre he resided until his death. He retired from farm work in 1976 thereafter devoting his time to gardening and helping family and friends as long as he was able. Homer is survived by his wife Ruth and five children - Judith Hanson, Bucklin, KS; Maida Lawler, Oklahoma City, OK; Emily Finsan, Tucson, AZ; Bruce Blain, Copperas Cove, TX; and Rebah Opkis, Creighton, NE; also one brother Harold Blain and one sister Carlie Andre, both of Orchard. He took great pride in their children and also their granchildren - Allen Lawler, Irena Opkis, Terry and Sherri Garrison, Carol Blain and Heidi Finsand. Among the children's memories were the times Homer played games with them. There were Sunday afternoons when he gave up a nap to play croquet or baseball. Some evenings they would play games on the dining room table. His concern for their welfare was apparent when he rushed to see what happened when they got hurt. One snowy winter he walked Judy to school and she followed in his stps where the snow was deep. He was always faithful in church attendance bringing the whole family. Every night at 10 p.m they had family devotions with everyone participating. Homer lived his faith. If someone needed help, he could be counted on to be there. He was respected and loved by many in his community and church. He served as church treasurer until his death.
