Stahly, eldest son of Joel and Amelia Stahly, was born in Seward county, Nebraska, June 17, 1895 and died at the military hospital at Fort Riley, Kansas, Christmas morning, 1918, aged 23 years, 6 months and 8 days. Stahly, eldest son of Joel and Amelia Stahly, was born in Seward county, Nebraska, June 17, 1895 and died at the military hospital at Fort Riley, Kansas, Christmas morning, 1918, aged 23 years, 6 months and 8 days. Homer was converted at the Pleasant View church when about twelve years of age, was baptized in the Blue river and became a member of the Pleasant View church. As a boy growing up he was obedient and a home-loving boy. He attended the country school near his home and in 1913 entered the Milford high school and graduated in 1917, standing third in his class of twelve, of this class four were in the military service. Homer being the first to break the class circle and enter the great beyond. He left for Camp Funston, August 30, 1918. Here amid the temptations and influences incident to camp life he kept his integrity and preserved a devoted Christian spirit, his inspector, physician, nurse and comrades all joining in highest commendation of his clean life and his triumphant death. In one of his last letters, written to a cousin, dated December 1st, he said, "The same God who has been with me hitherto, will help me here." At a camp meeting in Omaha in 1917 he received great spiritual help and since then in particular has his Christian life been one of victory. Last year 'he did some farming for himself and in recognition of his obligation to God he set aside one-tenth of all he made for the Lord's work and just before going to camp he handed his mother some money telling her it was a part of his tithe and that she should use it in Gospel work. The funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at the auditorium, conducted by Rev. C. I. Scott, assisted by Rev. F. L. Weigert, and Rev. A. L. Pratt. The Misses Phoebe and Amelia Overholt and Bessie Robbins of the Hope Mission, Omaha, sang. He was buried with military honors, all places of business being closed during the services, which were attended by a large concourse of people.
