The Pleasanton "Star" of Saturday last contains the following notice of the death and burial of Horace E. Harlan of San Ramon: On Tuesday morning [March 15] at 5 o'clock at his late home in San Ramon Valley, Horace E. Harlan departed this life. About a year since the symptoms of that dreaded disease, consumption, were already deeply implanted in the deceased and he sought the balmy and pure air of Denver to seek relief, but too late. One week ago last Wednesday he returned here and was taken home - to die. The deceased was born in San Ramon Valley on the 22d of February, 1859, and was a few days over 28 years of age at the time of his death. He was liked by all. We have yet to hear a person say an ill word against his character. That he stood well in the estimation of the community in which he had been born and raised was testified by the high respect and regard in which all held him and by the large number from Pleasanton and other places that followed him to his last resting place. Owing to the failure of the Oregon steamer to arrive on time, his sister, Mrs. Lleweling [sic], being aboard it, the funeral did not take place till yesterday. Over forty vehicles left the house. His remains were taken to the Livermore Presbyterian Church. Rev. Dr. Bentley preached an eloquent and touching sermon. They were taken to Oak Knoll cemetery and laid to rest in the family lot by the side of his father [Joel Harlan], who preceded him several years to the grave. There, on the very top of that beautiful knoll, looking out upon the valleys of Livermore and San Ramon, and in full sight of the scenes of his infancy, his boyhood and his manhood, lie all that remains mortal of Horace E. Harlan. We knew him but to love and respect him. May his ashes rest in peace." END
