Description	:	Horace W. Evans, son of the late Grover Cleveland Evans and Martha Jane Riggin Evans, ran a barbershop for forty years on Maryland Ave. in Crisfield beginning in 1950. In Woodrow T. Wilson's history of "Crisfield, Maryland, 1676-1976," Horace recounts that he began his barbering career in Crisfield on "September 15, 1924, the day after President Coolidge visited Immanuel Methodist Church, as recorded on a pew there." Evans, son of the late Grover Cleveland Evans and Martha Jane Riggin Evans, ran a barbershop for forty years on Maryland Ave. in Crisfield beginning in 1950. In Woodrow T. Wilson's history of "Crisfield, Maryland, 1676-1976," Horace recounts that he began his barbering career in Crisfield on "September 15, 1924, the day after President Coolidge visited Immanuel Methodist Church, as recorded on a pew there." He started as a lather boy in the barber shop of A. L. Barneo located downtown near Main and Tenth Streets, in the back of a restaurant owned and operated by Fred Thornton. A year later he formed a barber partnership with Mitchell Purcell with whom he worked until the outbreak of WWII in 1942. During the war years, Horace Evans lived and worked in Baltimore at Glen L. Martin's aircraft factory, moonlighting at barbering. In 1950 he returned to Crisfield and built a barbershop in front of his home on Maryland Ave. Known for his meticulous barbering service and friendly conversation, he was esteemed by all who new him. Mr. Evans' first wife, Katie Agnes Sterling, daughter of Capt. John E. Sterling and Alice Bedsworth Sterling preceded him in death. His second wife was Iris Tyler Daniels Evans, who died in 1984. Mr. Evans was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church where he was a lay leader, longtime member of the choir and former Sunday School superintendent and teacher. He was also a member of Chesapeake Lodge 147 AF and AM, in Crisfield. A funeral service was held July 29 in Immanuel Church. Officiating were Rev. Bill S. Wilson and Rev. Dallas Butler. Interment was in Sunnyridge Memorial Park. In 1994, his son Terry donated his one-room barbershop to the Fairmount Academy Historical Association and it was moved to the grounds of Fairmount Academy in lower Fairmount, Maryland for preservation.
