Thanks, Nancy (Letcher) Heib. ---------------------------------- Note: Howard's death certificate states that he was born in 1842, but his headstone, and other records say he was born in 1844. ---------------------------------- Note: Howard's eldest sibling Huldah Smith, was born in Delaware County New York (per her death certificate). Howard's youngest sibling Nancy, was born in Binghamton, Broome County New York on July 5, 1846. ------------------------------------- The 1850 census of Bertrand Township, Berrien Co. MI shows their father James Smith [Sr.] living with five children, ages 12, 10, 7, 6 and 4, but with no wife. ------------------------------------- His sister Nancy's death certificate lists her mother's maiden name as "Nancie" Carroll, but that is NOT correct, as Bakertown Cemetery records and the headstone, list their mother's name as "Sally E., wife of James Smith". Bakertown cemetery records show that "Sally E." died on Jan. 25, 1848, age 28. ------------------------------------- The obituary for Howard's father James Smith [Sr.], states that James Smith's first wife (Howard's mother), was "Sarah" E. Carroll. It also "incorrectily" states that Sally/Sarah had died on Jan. 28, 1849. ------------------------------- Note: His father James Smith [Sr.], age 36, (of Buchanan Twp. Berrien Co. Michigan), was remarried on March 31, 1852 to Mrs. Mary (Howe) Demont, age 32, (of Bertrand Twp., Berrien Co. Michigan). Mary was the daughter of Frederick Howe Sr. and his wife Polly Bliss. They were married at Howard (Township), Cass County Michigan (N. E. of Niles), by Isaiah Carbury [Carberry], Justice of the Peace. (Marriage Certificate Record No. B2-220). ------------------------------------ Note: Mary had three children by her former husband Edward Demont (who died Jan. 5, 1851 at the age of 30 years). Their three children were: Richard A., Frederick George, and Florence DeMont. ------------------------------------ Mary later died on Dec. 24, 1884 in South Bend, St. Joseph Co. Indiana, and is buried next to her first husband Edward Demont in the Howe Cemetery, South of Buchanan, Berrien Co. Michigan. -------------------------------------- On April 18, 1861 legal guardians were appointed for Howard (age 17) and two of his sisters Mary Ellen Smith and Nancy A. Smith, by the Probate Judge in Berrien Co. Michign, because they had inherited some land in Section 35 of Buchanan Township. (They inherited it from Caleb Smith Jr., their father's brother). Howard is listed (and he signed his name) in the guardianship papers as "Francis Howard Smith". The guardian appointed for Howard and his sister Nancy was Mr. Francis Willard Howe, the brother of their step-mother Mary (Howe) DeMont - Smith. Note: Their father James Smith [Sr.] was still living at this time. The guardian appointed for his sister Mary Ellen Smith was Mr. Abram Hoag (the second husband of her Aunt Sally Smith). (Abram Hoag's second wife Sally, is buried next to her first husband Caleb Smith Jr. and Howard's parents James Smith [Sr.] and Sally E. (Carroll) Smith). (After Caleb died in 1851, Sally became the second wife of Abram Hoag). After Caleb's wife Sally (Hoag) died in 1861, the three children inherited the property of Caleb Smith Jr. -------------------------------------- Howard's older sister Mary Ellen Smith was born June 23, 1843 in N. Y. State, and she married Ezekiel James Borden on Feb. 5, 1865 in Bertrand Township, South of Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan, at the home of their eldest sister Huldah. ------------------------------------- Howard served in the Civil War, in the 12th Michigan Infantry, Company C., as a Sergeant. Enlistment date: Oct. 14, 1861. He enlisted in Co. C. as a private on Dec. 19, 1861, at Buchanan, Michigan, at the age of 18. He was promoted to Full Corporal on May 13, 1864. Promoted to Full Sergeant on May 6, 1865. He mustered out on Feb. 15, 1866 at Camden, Arkansas. ------------------------------------ His father James Smith [Sr.], also served in this same unit. (Howard's step-brother Richard A. DeMont also served as an officer, in this same unit). --------------------------------- Howard's older brother James Milton Smith [Jr.], served in the Civil War in Company A, of the 6th Michigan Infantry. James Milton Smith [Jr.] died in the war on May 22, 1862. ----------------------------------- m. # 1. Howard was married to his first wife Mary Elizabeth ("Libbie") Alvord on June 4, 1871 in Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan. (Anouncement in the "Berrien County Record", Buchanan, Michigan on June 8, 1871). She was born on Aug. 16, 1849 (per cemetery records), the daughter of Charles Wellington Alvord and his wife Cynthia Amelia Dempsey. "Libbie" Smith died on Nov. 21, 1874 (per cemetery records), at the age of 25 years, 3 months, and 15 days. She is buried in the Bakertown Cemetery, as "Libbie M. Smith". Her death announcement in the local newspaper reads: "Deaths. Died, Nov. 20, 1873, at Bakertown, Mrs. LIBBIE M. SMITH, wife of Howard F. Smith, aged 24 years, 3 months, and 6 days". ------------------------------------ Howard and Libby (Alvord) Smith had a son named Harry F. Smith who was born in Buchanan Township, in 1872. When Libbie died, their son Harry was only 1 year, 10 months, and 29 days old. ------------------------------------- Harry was later named as the executor of the will for his cousin Milton James Bliss in 1932 (when Harry was then living in Detroit, MI). Harry returned from Detroit, MI to Buchanan, MI after he retired in 1939. Harry died in 1953, at the age of 80. Harry is buried near his father Howard Francis Smith in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, in Buchanan, Michigan. ------------------------------------- Note: Howard and Libbie were married for only 3 years, 5 months, and 17 days, when Libbie died, in 1874. ----------------------------------- Howard has been listed as a "wagon maker" (possibly for the Rough Wagon factory in Buchanan). ------------------------------------ The 1880 census shows Howard Smith, living as a boarder with the Garrett Morriss family in Buchanan, Michigan. Howard is listed as a carpenter. ------------------------------------ Howard married his second wife, Mary A. Gosline on April 25, 1882 in Berrien County Michigan. (He age 38, she 29). An announcement in the "Berrien County Record" newspaper, in Buchanan, MI on April 27, 1882, page 2, column 4, reads as follows: MARRIAGES. April 25, 1882, in this place, by Rev. W. I. Cogshall, Mr. HOWARD F. SMITH and Miss MARY GOSLINE, all of Buchanan. Note: Mary was born in N. Y. in 1852, and she died in March of 1915. Cemetery records show that she was buried on March 18, 1915. --- Howard Smith and Mary Gosline had two children: 1. Caroline ("Carrie") Almira Smith, born 1883. She married Richard Marshall Kean, and Elmon P. Starr. 2. Cora M. Smith, born May 26, 1885, in Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan. She married George A. Howard, on Sept. 11, 1907, in St. Joseph Co. IN. (Cora is buried as Cora "Smith"). -------------------------------------- The 1899 Directory of Berrien County Michigan, lists Howard F. Smith and wife, living at 8 Lake Street, in Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan. His wife Mrs. Howard [Mary] Smith, is also listed as a dressmaker. ---------------------------- In the 1900 census, they were living in Buchanan, Berrien Co. Michigan with their daughter Cora M. Smith, age 15. (Cora is the daughter of Howard and his second wife Mary A. Gosline). ------------------------------------ In the 1910 census they are living in South Bend, Portage Township, St. Joseph Co. Indiana, with their daughter Cora M. and her husband George Howard. ----------------------------------- Cora was born in Michigan in May of 1885. She was married to George Howard about 1908 .(Perhaps Cora later divorced, as she is listed as Cora M. Smith in the cemetery records). Cora died in Fresco, California in 1918. Cora's obit (listed as Miss Cora "Smith") was published in the "Niles Daily Star" on Nov. 19, 1918). ------------------------------------ This 1910 census also states that Howard's second wife Mary (Gosline) Smith, had given birth to 2 children, both still living. ------------------------------------ Howard died at his residence on Phelps St. in Buchanan, Michigan, of angina pectoris, at the age of 79 years, 4 months and 25 days. A contributing factor to his death is listed as epilipsy. ------------------------------------ His death certificate states that he was a widower and a retired carpenter. His parents are listed as James Smith and Unknown mother (both born in New York State). ------------------------------------- His death certificate lists his "date of birth" as Feb. 14, 1842. ------------------------------------ It also states that he was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, and that the arrangements were made by Childs Funeral Home. ---------------------------------- The "informant" for his death certificate was listed as Carrie Kean (his daughter), of Buchanan, Michigan. (Carrie ("Caroline") was later married to a Elmon P. Starr, but she is buried next to her first husband Richard Marshall Kean). -------------------------------------- The purchasers of the cemetery lot (Section A, lot 93) are listed as Cora M. Smith and Caroline Kean (his daughters). ---------------------------------- The large family stone says "Smith" on one side and "Kean" on the other side. ---------------------------------- Burial records show that Howard was buried on July 11, 1921. --------------------------------------- Also buried near Howard in Section A, lot 93, are: -------------- His 2nd wife, Mary A.
