MARY ELLEN BORDEN 1843 - 1894 ----------------------------- Note: Mary's two eldest step-children Charles M. Borden [and wife Nettie], and Frank C. Borden [and wife Jennie M.], both lived in Wichita, Sedgwick County Kansas, and are both buried there. ------------------------------------- The obituary for Mary Ellen Borden was published in the newspaper in Lawrence, Douglas County Kansas, on April 9, 1894. It reads as follows: --- Death of Mrs. Borden. Saturday night Mrs. Mary A. [should be Mary "E"], Borden died at her home on New York street, of heart trouble. Although she has been ailing for a month past, Mrs. Borden had not been seriously ill longer than two days. Previous to that time she was able to be up and around and it was not thought her illness was anything more than temporary. The funeral services will be held at the house tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock, and will be conducted by Rev. G. D. Rodgers of the Baptist church. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. Mrs. Mary A. [should be "E."] Borden was born in May 1843 and was therefore only a little over 51 years old [51 years and 11 months]. She has not lived in Lawrence many years, but in the time she has been here she has made many friends among those whom she met. Her husband died since her residence here in Colorado and since that time Mrs. Borden has lived with her daughter [step-daughter Harriet "Hattie"] at the home on New York street. To this daughter and the other children is extended the sympathy of the many friends and acquaintances all over the city. Besides Miss Hattie Borden, who has been at home with her mother, there are three sons and one daughter away from here. One of the sons came in from Wichita this morning, but none of the other children are here. ___________________________ |
