On December 15, 1921 he was married by the Reverend Elmer Burns to Marguerite Burge in the Christian Church parsonage in Clarinda, Iowa. They have two children, Jack Stanley and Joyce Chumbley. Howard spent his whole life farming and his retirement to Villisca in 1973. He was a veteran of World War 1, a faithful member of the Villisca United Methodist church and a charter member of the Methodist Men. Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister Beatrice. Surviving are his wife, Marguerite, his two children, Jack and Joyce, a sister, Florence Boston, four grandchildren. Garey Cooney, Janice Miller, Dennis Cooney, and Sheri Cooney. Also two step grandchildren, David and Elizabeth Cooney, and twins Adrenne and Marnie Miller. Services were held Wednesday, July 24, 1980 at 10 a.m. in the United Methodist Church. Officiating was the Rev. Elliott T. Bodwell. Casketbearers were Paul Boston, Dennis Cooney, Don Perkins, Roger Posting, Dwight Lewis, and Don Williams. Mrs. Florence White and mrs. Irene Focht took care of the flowers. Music was provided by Mrs. Roger Boston and Ramon Dick accompanied by Martin Hentsch. “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Into The Garden” were the selections. Mrs. Elmo Buffon and Mrs. Marie Lewis took care of the registry book. Ushers were Verne Watts and Willard White. Military Rites were conducted by the American Legion, Villisca, Iowa.
