He died at 4:30 that day without regaining consciousness following the shooting. Liquor is blamed for his death. He had no known financial difficulties and his home life was happy, but he is said to have been under the influence of liquor for several days preceding his death, which caused him to be dependent. Found By His Wife Mr. Cooney gave no warning that he intended to commit suicide and left no note giving any reason why he wished to die. His wife thought nothing unusual of his action when he went into the kitchen and placed his arm about her just before his death and then went into another part of the house. It is thought that immediately after he left her he took his .22 calibre rifle from the closet and went to the front porch where he fired the bullet which entered his forehead between his eyes, piercing his brain. The ball from the gun emerged through the skull in the crown of the head raising but not puncturing the scalp. Nobody hart the shot, but Mrs. Cooney was attracted to her husband by his heavy breathing, and going to the front porch she found him unconscious, with the bullet wound in his head. She called her son-in-law, Malcolm Boston, who was near by and medical aid was summoned, but Mr. Cooney was beyond help. John Patterson Cooney was born in the Arlington neighborhood in Montgomery County, Iowa on February 22, 1870 and was 60 years old at his death. He was the son of Jediah and Nancy Cooney, and his father preceded him in death on the same date he died, September 6, twenty years ago. He was married to Celia Deere on March 10, 1893 and to them were born three children, Mrs. Malcolm Poston and Howard Cooney of southeast of Villisca and Beartrice Cooney, living at home with her parents. Mr. Cooney was the youngest of seven brothers, three of whom survive. They are Tom and Al of Villisca and Clint of Fort Madison, Iowa. The deceased spent his entire life in the community. Immediately after Mr. Cooney’s death his body was taken to the Wolfe & Gourley Funeral Home where it was prepared for burial, and Sunday morning it was returned to the Cooney home to await the funeral which was held there Monday at 2:30 p.m. The service was conducted by Rev. Geo. A. Lawton. The singing was by Mrs. F. E. Shane and Mrs. S. M. Joliffe, accompanied by Mrs. J. L. Wheeler, and the pall bearers were Frank Himiller, Reuben Westerlund, Vern Lewis, Geo.
