Description	:	Howard S. Guenthner, 87, of Laurel, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014. Howard was born Aug. 24, 1926, to Reinhold and Elizabeth Guenthner as the fourth of twelve children. He was received into God’s family by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit through Holy Baptism as a child in Mercer County, N.D. When he graduated high school, he enlisted in the Army and... Read More	Howard S. Guenthner, 87, of Laurel, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014. Howard was born Aug. 24, 1926, to Reinhold and Elizabeth Guenthner as the fourth of twelve children. He was received into God’s family by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit through Holy Baptism as a child in Mercer County, N.D. His parents farmed in Mercer County, where he spent his childhood working on the farm. He completed his high school education while staying in town and working as a telephone operator. When he graduated high school, he enlisted in the Army and completed his basic training at Fort Knox. He was part of the occupying force of Japan, serving as a staff sergeant for motor pool and tank command. His favorite story was about climbing Mount Fuji. He exited the service in Dec. 1946, and moved to Walla Walla, Wash., where his family had relocated and he honed his mechanical skills. The family then settled in Silesia. Howard soon earned an engineering degree at MSU Bozeman while working at the Baxter Hotel. Howard married Rose Mary Fox on Oct. 23, 1949, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Laurel. They were blessed to have 63 years together and five children. They lived in Lewistown and Bozeman, finally settling in Laurel where he was employed by Cenex Refinery for 34 years. Howard was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church serving his Lord in a multitude of ways. He was also active in many charitable organizations, including American Legion, American Historical Society of Germans from Russia (AHSGR), and co-founder of the Laurel Herbstfest, including writing the annual pageant. He was an enthusiastic gardener and sausage creator. Howard is survived by his children, Timothy (Patsy) Guenthner of Laurel, Pamela (Jess) Schafer of Billings, Jennifer (Kurt) Sielbach of Puyallup, Wash., Roxanne (Dennis) Roberts of Laurel, and William (Amy) Guenthner of Park City; twelve grandchildren, Liz, Brad, David, Jessica, Sarah, Nicole, Ryan, Alysia, Jason, Justin, Randy, and Ali; and nineteen great-grandchildren, with three soon to arrive. He is also survived by sister, Freida Wells; brothers, Alvin, Harry (Delores), Duane (Mary Ann), Byron (Arleen), Ted, John (Nancy); and many sisters- and brothers-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reinhold and Elizabeth; brother, Raymond; sister, Edna; and siblings at birth. Dad will be greatly missed by all who knew him, as he was known to most as one of the “givers” lending a hand where needed and for his smile and sense of humor. Trusting in the Lord, we will all someday be singing in Heaven with Dad, Brother, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, Uncle and friend. A special thanks to Dad’s Canyon Creek family, to whom we entrusted his care/ Viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, at Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel. Funeral services will at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug., 15, at St. John’s Lutheran Church with interment in the Laurel Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, The Alzheimers Association, The American Legion or the charity of your choice.
