Miss Ida Flitch, daughter of Peter Flitch, of Buffalo township, took her life Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Miss Flitch was temporarily insane and her folks had been watching her. At the time of the suicide the only persons at home were Mrs. Flitch and a boy of 17 and the deceased. Mrs. Flitch lay down to sleep, leaving the boy to watch. The boy went to sleep and a short time both awakened by the report of a gun, and going out to the barn found the girl lying dead. She took a single barrel shot gun, pulled the hammer back and placed the gun between a box and an oat bin, propped up the front end of the gun with a stick, then getting down on her knees so that the muzzle of the gun came directly over her heart, took another stick and pushed the trigger, discharged the contents into her breast, which caused instant death. About four years ago Miss Flitch was affected in the same way, but she had entirely recovered until about two months ago, when her folks noticed she was again acting very strange. Miss Flitch was an accomplished young lady of 21, she had taught school in the county, and her tragic death cast a gloom over the entire neighborhood in which she lived. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the Union church in Buffalo township. Rev. L.M. Tarr conducted the exercises. (transcribed by Judy Mayfield) June 2020
