Some (only three or four, thankfully) family trees on Ancestry.com then used that name for their entries. It appears to be the result of someone looking at a newsprint type font, pulling apart the "d", and inadvertently creating "Iola" from "Ida". Unfortunately there is virtually no way to undo the OneWorldTree entry so there have been those who have used "Iola" without fully researching and documenting Ida's life. Every major U.S. Census that applies uses "Ida": 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940. All of the Iowa applicable census reports use "Ida". The Jefferson County marriage record on file at the Jefferson County Recorders office states, legally, that "Joseph Elmer Coffin" and "Ida May Waters" were duly married on December 30, 1896 at the home of the officiating pastor, Rev. Levi Marshall. The obituaries for Ida and Joseph refer to her name as "Ida". Her headstone, as shown on this memorial, uses "Ida". The name "Iola" was never a legitimate first name for Ida May Waters Coffin. ------------- ------------- In January 2008 this contributor (I live in Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa - and who moved to this area in 1973) was contacted by a Waters family descendant. This individual sent this contributor a 600 page Waters family history via email, which was then converted to print. While reading this family history a notation that someone was buried in "Friends Cemetery, Pleasant Plain, Jefferson County, Iowa" suddenly stood out. This Pleasant Plain location is only a few miles NE of Fairfield, and this was the first indication that anyone in my family (other than my sister who came to Fairfield in 1965 to attend Parsons College) had settled in this area of southeast Iowa! This individual was Ida May Waters, who had married Joseph Elmer Coffin. This discovery would have probably ended at that point, except that upon visiting the genealogy section of the Fairfield Public Library this contributor/distant Waters relative then discovered that Ida May had two sisters, Cora Estella and Ivy Myrtle Waters. They, in their own right, had gone on to marry brothers of Joseph Elmer Coffin! It was that discovery and the wealth (curse) of genealogy and family history material at the FPL that has enabled this contributor to decide to research these Waters/Coffin lineages. As a result, literally a couple of thousand "off-shoot" branches and twigs have been added to the family tree, and living descendants located around the country! Many headstones and grave plots have been located in the Jefferson/Keokuk/Washington/Van Buren County areas that are directly related to the Coffin lineages. Over time many of these descendants will be added to Find A Grave and relationship links provided.
