Read More	Irene Hemmer, a former longtime resident of Chelan, died peacefully with her daughter at her side on Feb. 6, 2012 in Arlington, Washington. Irene was born on a farm on May 28, 1920 in Butte, Nebraska to William and Ida Goedde, the eighth of nine children. Later, the family moved west to North Central Washington during the 1940's. Irene married Raymond Hemmer, on May 29, 1944 in Chelan. She worked for a few years at the JC Penney store. Irene and Ray raised their two children, Ron and Julie, together until Ray was tragically killed in an accident while on his job with the City of Chelan in February 1956. Irene went on to raise her children as a single mother and to also care for her mother, Ida, in her home. Irene was known in Chelan as a generous and honest woman, a wonderful cook, seamstress, and an avid gardener. She planted a huge garden each year and grew beautiful flowers in her yard. She spent each fall canning the fruits and vegetables she harvested. Her sweet dill pickles, homemade grape juice, butterscotch pie, donuts, and homemade rolls were enjoyed by all. Her frosted sugar cookies were prized by her children's classmates at each holiday school party. Irene hosted all the family holiday dinners, crowding many sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews into her small home. Irene also dearly loved cats and dogs and had several as pets. Irene also operated an in-home daycare for children, providing a safe, nurturing environment for the young ones in her care. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and an active Altar Society member there for years. Irene lived in Chelan for more than 60 years until she moved to Arlington after suffering a major stroke in May 2005. This move allowed her daughter to watch over her for the last several years and gave Irene a chance to enjoy watching her only grandchild grow up. Those who knew Irene will not forget her smile and generous spirit. Irene is survived by her children, Ron Hemmer of Chelan and Julia Winchell and her husband, Steve, and their daughter, Katherine, of Arlington. She is also survived by her sister, Zita Theis, of Omak; her brother, Herb Goedde; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Joe (Mary) Goedde of Chelan; and many nieces and nephews. Many other friends and relatives will also dearly miss her presence in their lives. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters: Julia Goedde, Hilda Goedde, and Marie Lynch and her three brothers: Leo Goedde, Joe Goedde, and Ivo Goedde. Irene's Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis Catholic Church in Chelan on Monday, Feb. 27, at 11 a.m. A rosary will be said for her Sunday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Memorial donations can be made in her name to N.O.A.H., a no-kill animal shelter at 31300 Brandstrom Road, Stanwood, WA 98292. Services have been entrusted to Precht Rose Chapel, Chelan.
