Gray died at his home on South Learnard and Twenty-third streets yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Death came to the veteran of the civil war after a long illness due to creeping paralysis which had troubled him for some time and was the direct cause of the recent illness, which overcame him in March. He was 73 years old. Mr. Gray had come to be one of the prominent men in Washington Post of the G.A.R. He had completed a successful term as commissioner of the poor in Douglas county discharging his duties with care and exactness. He had lived in Lawrence for fourteen years. I. J. Gray was born in Seville, Ohio in 1844. He spent his early life there, enlisting in the army when eighteen years old. After serving until the end of the civil war he entered the banking business in different cities in Michigan, Dakotas and Iowa. In 1903 he moved with his family to Lawrence. Mr. Gray was an unusual man in many ways. His intellect was as clear the day before his death as that of a man in middle life and he maintained an active interest in everything. He was a veteran of the civil war, a member of the G.A.R. yet his beautiful voice retained its clarity and melody. A temperate man himself, he was never in sympathy with the prohibitory law and was always ready to attack it with his ironical pen. He seemed to realize perfectly the outcome of his ailment, creeping paralysis, and within the last ten days told a business associate that he would pass away before the first of August. This thought occasioned no fear in his heart and he faced the future undaunted. Mr. Gray leaves four children: Mrs. W. R. Crane of State College, Pa., John Yale Gray of Chicago, Paul and Marion Gray, who have been living at the home in Lawrence. The funeral will be held from the residence on South Learnard and Twenty-third street at 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
