Death Comes Suddenly, However, During Early Hours Of Monday Morning. Funeral Services Held On Wednesday. Interment Wednesday. I. Purnell Horsey, one of Crisfield's prominent and most highly respected citizens, was found dead in bed at his home on central Main Street, this city, at an early hour last Monday morning. Death had evidently come to Mr. Horsey as the result of heart failure, following an illness of several months. It is believed that he passed away in his sleep without knowledge that the end was near. Mr. Horsey, who had passed the 71st milestone of life, had been in declining health for several months. Early in the summer he underwent an operation and treatment in a Baltimore hospital, and since that time although he had not been as active as previously, it was thought that he was gradually improving. On Sunday he appeared as well as usual, and retired Sunday night without any indication that his condition had reached the critical stage. About 3 o'clock Monday morning, however when Mrs. Horsey awoke, she, found that her husband had passed away. The deceased was a son of the late Oliver S. Horsey, for many years a prominent resident of Crisfield and a noted Justice of the Peace of this community. A member of an old and influential family, Mr. Horsey spent his entire life in Crisfield, was active in its business, social and political affairs and contributed materially to the progress and development of the town. He was a gentlemen of many fine qualities, and merited the high esteem in which he was held by the entire community. In his early life Mr. Horsey was engaged in the mercantile business, and during the last Cleveland administration he served as Assistant Postmaster of Crisfield. A short while later he engaged in the shirt manufacturing business, establishing here the first garment factory that ever opened in Crisfield. He continued to operate that business successfully for many years, until his plant was purchased by the Erlanger Manufacturing Co., shortly after the close of the war. For sometime Mr. Horsey continued to manage the plant for its new owners, but retired from active duties when his health began to fail, about three years ago. Mr. Horsey was an ardent Democrat and took an active interest in political affairs. He was also a great admirer of fine horses, and had raised, trained and owned some of the fastest, ---- horses that this County ever produced. He was considered one of the best posted horseman in this section of the country. Mr. Horsey was a charter member of Crisfield Lodge of Elks, and was affilated with Immanuel M. E. church. Funeral services were held from his late home on Main Street at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning, conducted by his pastor, Rev. John J. Bunting, assisted by Rev. J. L. Nichols. Interment was in Crisfield cemetery. The pall-bearers were: Active—I. H. Tawes, Jas. H. Sterling, Wm. P. Horsey, Wm. M. Wooster, Charles L. Ward and Harold L. Loreman; Honorary—Wm. J. Peyton, J. W. Disharoon, E. Benson Dennis, and Chas. Lankford of Exmore, Va. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ida Horsey; and one son Oliver S. Horsey of Crisfield, who is associated with the securities department of the First National Bank of Baltimore, as Eastern Shore representative. The Crisfield Times, October 6, 1928 pg.1
