Prominent Fort Benton Resident and Pioneer of City Answers Final Call The many friends of Mrs. D. G. Lockwood were shocked and grieved to hear of her passing away at her home in this city at 6:10 p.m. Saturday, following an illness of several weeks, and her passing cast a pall of gloom over the entire city, as she had been active in civic and social affairs. Few of her friends realized she was in a critical condition and the announcing of her passing came as a sudden shock to most of them. Mrs. Lockwood had been in rather poor health for the past several months and everything possible was done for her, but to no avail, and her passing ended a residence of over 57 years the most of which were spent in Fort Benton. During her long residence here she has gained a large circle of friends who with the relatives will mourn her early death. Belle Frields was born in Fort Benton on Aug. 4, 1878, and died on Oct. 5, 1935, age 57 years, two months and one day. She was the daughter of the late George W. and Katherine Frields, pioneer residents of this county. When seven years of age the deceased went to Canada with her parents and lived there nine years, then returning to this city where she attended the grade school. After completing grade school she went to St. Mary's Hall at Faribault, Minn., and finished at Hardin college in Mexico, Mo. She was married to Dexter D. Lockwood, of this city, on Sept. 6, 1898, and has made her home here since that time, Mr. Lockwood being engaged in the drug business during all of that time. During the war Mrs. Lockwood assisted with the war work and had charge of the finance committee for the raising of money to carry on the various activities of the ladies during that period and devoted a great deal of time to it. She was a member of the Sons and Daughters of Pioneers. She had resided in Fort Benton for about 45 years. She took an active interest in civic and social affairs of the city for a number of years. Mrs. Lockwood is survived by her devoted husband, Dexter G. Lockwood, and by two brothers, David M. and George W. Frields, Jr., and by one sister, Mrs. Murray Deaton of Great Falls, and many nieces, nephews and cousins, a number of whom reside in this city, and a host of friends, not only in this county but over the state, who have visited at the Lockwood home during their long residence here. Funeral services will be held from the home in this city this afternoon at 2 o'clock, and will be conducted by the Rev. Lee Young, pastor of the Episcopal church, of which she had been a member for many years. Interment will be in Riverside cemetery, in the family plot. The relatives have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in this their hour of great loss and sorrow.
