Ward, in Geneva township, of old age, Isaiah Matteson, aged 77 years 6 months and 23 days. Isaiah Matteson was born at Shaftsbury, Vt., March 18, 1822. January 5, 1850, he was married to Caroline Harrington at Shaftsbury. As soon as navigation opened that spring, the young couple traveled by stage and canal to Ashford, Fond du Lac county, Wis., the journey occupying about three months. Here, Mr. Matteson bought a timbered far of government land and at once began life as a pioneer in what was then a very new country. Mr. Matteson's stock in cash consisted of about $1.50, and his wife cooked her first meal at the side of a stump. They lived on this farm for forty-two years, happy and prosperous. The children had come west and in 1892, Mr. and Mrs. Matteson sold out in Wisconsin and moved out here in order to be with them. Mr. Matteson purchased what is known as the Kit Carson homestead, and he leaves that property clear and ready money, sufficient to provide for the wants of the aged wife who survives him, had there been any necessity for such provision. Mr. Matteson was a farmer who made farming pay. He provided liberally for all dependent on him and was a most estimable and highly respected citizen in every walk of life. Mr. Matteson was a Universalist in religion and was broad and liberal in all of his views, religious and otherwise. His funeral was conducted from the Ward residence in Geneva township at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon by Rev. C.B. Lenfest of the Fairmont Methodist church. The interment was in the family lot in the Fairmont cemetery. All of the children of the deceased reside in this county. They are Clark H. of West Blue, Richard A., Charles W. and Mrs. J.M.
