Matteson Lived Long and Useful Life---Early Settler in County---Filled Many Public and Civic Offices with Credit Richard A. (Dick) Matteson passed away at the Geneva General hospital at 2:30 p.m., Monday September 27, 1948, at the age of 94 years, 10 months and 17 days. He was Geneva's oldest and one of its best-loved citizens. He was exceptionally vigorous for one of his years until the last few months. Since the death of his wife, eight months before to the day, he had failed rapidly. He was in the hospital almost three weeks. Mr. Matteson was one of the early settlers of Filllmore county, coming to a farm near Exeter in June 1879. A few years later he bought a farm in Geneva township and farmed there until he moved to Geneva in 1919 and resided in his home here until his death. Mr. Matteson was a public spirited citizen and held many posts to which he was elected by his fellow citizens. Politically he was a republican and was active in that party's councils all his active life. He was greatly interested in Masonry and served the various lodges in numerous capacities. Mr. Matteson was born at Campbellsport, Wis., November 10, 1853, the son of Caroline (Harrington) and Isaiah Matteson. His father who was born at Shaftsbury, Vt., March 18, 1822, and died at Fairmont, Neb., October 11, 1899, was a farmer whose Welsh ancestors came to America in the early settlement of Rhode Island. His mother was born at Shaftsbury, Vt., August 16, 1832, and died at Geneva, Neb., December 1, 1915. She was of English and Scotch descent; her grandfather and six uncles served in the Revolution. Mr. Matteson served as an officer of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company many years. He took an important part in the political history of Fillmore county, holding the following positions: Deputy county clerk, 1888-1892, county clerk 1892-1896; chairman county board, 1910-1920; member of the constitutional convention, 1919-1920; substitute county judge 1927-1929; and chairman of the republican county central committee fifteen years. He was a past master of Geneva Lodge, No. 79 A.F. and A.M., 1892-1893, past patron, Geneva Chapter No. 180, Order Eastern Star, 1909-1910, a Knights Knights Templar and thirty-second degree Mason; a member of Royal Arch chapter and Naomi Council, R. & S. Masons of Geneva and a loyal member of the First Congregational church of Geneva. He served as chairman of loan drives and Red Cross committees five times during the first World War. He was a past president of the Geneva Community club. In all his public duties he served faithfully and capably. He married Anna M. Straley at Fairmont, Neb., February 10, 1884, and they were close companions and very dovoted until the death of Mrs. Matteson January 27, 1948, at Geneva. Surviving him in Geneva are his adopted son, R. Collis Matteson; a sister, Mrs. John Ward; a nephew, Harry Ward, and family; a niece, Mrs. Lyman Brooke, and family; and the widow and children of the late George Ward; children of his deceased brother, Clark Matteson, Mrs. Aurilla Geyer of Louisville, Neb., and Glenn Matteson of San Diego, Cal., Elmer Matteson of Sterling, Col., and Charles Matteson, who lives in New Mexico; and many relatives who live elsewhere. Mr. Matteson deeply appreciated honors received during his life and always was in good spirits. He liked and enjoyed people. He was a kindly soul and Fillmore county is a better place to live because of his life. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 29, at the Geneva Congregational church, the pastor, Rev. William G. Bohi, officiating. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The Masonic order was in charge at the grave.
