Clark Matteson, one of the oldest and most respected residents of Fairmont, was burned to death about 10:30 a.m. Monday. Matteson was born on a farm near Campbellsport, Fond du Lac county, Wisconsin, February 11, 1851. He departed this life at his home in Fairmont, Neb., October 21, 1940, at the age of 89 years, 8 months and 10 days. He was united in marriage to Ida May Purdy July 28, 1874. To his union four children were born, Dee, Glenn, Edna and Aurilla. His wife, Dee and Edna preceded him in death. In 1883 the family came to Fillmore county, Nebraska, and settled on a farm northwest of Exeter. Three years later they sold and bought a farm in West Blue township, where they lived until 1918, when they moved into Fairmont, where he has lived ever since. Mr. Matteson had the reputation of being strictly honest. He leaves to mourn his death, two children, Glenn of Hastings, and Aurilla Geyer of Louisville, Neb., and six grandchildren, also one brother, R. A. Matteson of Geneva, and one sister, Mrs. J. M. Ward of Geneva. One brother, Charles, passed away at Fort Collins, Col. Services were held at the Methodist church at 2 o'clock p.m. Wednesday, October 23, Rev. W. B. Pardun officiating. Interment was in the Fairmont cemetery. Wolford in charge. Cause of death: Fire. Lot owner: Clark Matteson.
