Ward, daughter of Isaiah and Caroline Harrington Matteson, was born March 16, 1857, in Ashford, Wis. She grew to young womanhood in that community, training herself for the teaching profession. She was united in marriage to John M. Ward February 8, 1877. The wedding took place in Fon du Lac, Wis. Mr. and Mrs. Ward established their home on a farm remaining in Wisconsin two years. Hearing the call to go west, they came to Exeter, Neb., in 1879. They farmed in that community six years, after which they came to the farm now operated by their son, Harry Ward. From 1885 to 1914 they worked and improved this productive farm. In 1914 they moved to Geneva and built a home, where Mrs. Ward lived until failing health caused her to move to the Brooke home. Mr. and Mrs. Ward were the parents of six children. Two of them entered the eternal realms while in infancy. One son, Percy, was not favored with the strength of body that is normal in youth. Though he could not attend school as other children did, he gained a good education under the diligent care of his mother, who took from her busy hours the time necessary for his training. He passed away July 12, 1918. George, the eldest son, answered the eternal summons July 24, 1945. The husband passed away March 27, 1930. Two children, Harry Ward and Mrs. Lyman Brooke, remain along with two daughters-in-law, Mrs. George Ward and Mrs. Harry Ward; a son-in-law, Lyman Brooke; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Ward united with the Congregational church when they moved to Geneva in 1914. Mrs Ward was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, in which she attained the high office of worthy matron. She and her husband were a part of the group of people whose good tastes and boundless energy placed the lovely Geneva Congregational church on to foundations. Mrs. Ward came to the end of her 93 years and more of life, May 16. She had been ill only a little over a week, but the tired body had little resistance to offer illness. She passed away at the Geneva General hospital Tuesday morning, May 16, 1950, at the age of 93 years and 2 months. Funeral services were held at the Geneva Congregational church at 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 19, Rev. William G. Bohl officiating. Mrs. W. H. Hinkle and Mrs. George Shuber sang "We Say Goodnight Here but Good Morning Up There" and "Rock of Ages." Mrs. Sheldon Johnson was accompanist. Six grandsons served as pallbearers. The Eastern Star service was given at the grave. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. Obit sent by: C Roth (#47864882)
