Lula P Holcomb (b.~1882 IA) ----------------------------------------------- PIONEER LADY PASSES AWAY Though Not Unexpected, Death Of Grandma French Was Shock To Community After a very short illness, Grandma French passed away at her home in Loup city, Thursday evening, march 30, 1933, at the age of 83 years, 11 month and 18 days. Mr. and Mrs. Charles French came to Loup City in 1876, where they have since reared their family and made their home. They witnessed and endured the hardships of pioneer life helping in the moulding [sic] of Sherman county from the beginning of settlement here. Her passing is a distinct loss to the community. She was known and loved by all. Mrs. Isibella Young French was born April 12, 1849, at Ft. Vernon, Knox county, Ohio. When three month old, her parents left there in a covered wagon for Janesville, Wisconsin, enroute [sic] stopping at the present site of Chicago, Illinois, when there were but seven houses in that community. They spent the winter of '49 and '50 at Janesville, then crossed the Wisconsin river on a raft to Richland county, Wisconsin, where they continued to reside and where Mrs. French spent her childhood and young womanhood. On June 27, 1869 she was united in marriage to Charles H. French. Two years later she and her husband and baby girl moved by covered wagon to Elk River, Minnesota, where they resided four years, then deciding to move further west, they again packed their belongings into a covered wagon, drawn by a yoke of oxen and started for Nebraska with their three children, arriving at Kearney July 11, 1875. The following spring on March 4, 1876, they came to Loup City, where Mrs. French has made her home ever since. Her last illness was of short duration and attended by but little suffering. Under the leadership of Rev. Geo. H. Wise, on May 27, 1907, she and her husband united with the Methodist church in Loup City, since which time she has been a steadfast member and by her faith in her Heavenly Father has never faltered. April 30th, 1922, her husband passed to his reward. One son, Charles Jr., also preceded her in death in early childhood. She was the mother of four children, three of whom survive and mourn her departure. They are: W. D. French and Mrs. Lydia Johansen, both of Loup city, Rev, Henry S. French, pastor of Signal Hill Methodist church of East St. Louis. Besides these members of the immediate family, she leaves three grand-children and six great grand-children and many other more distant relatives and a host of friends to mourn her passing. Funeral services were conducted from the church of her faith, the Methodist church of Loup City, Sunday afternoon, April 2, at two o'clock in charge of Rev. Geo. M. Carter, the pastor of the church, and her earthly remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband and small son in Evergreen cemetery. The church was filled with people who came to pay their last respects to one who had been a good mother and neighbor as well as a builder of western civilization.
