Murray McCARTY, 1200 Pontiac Street, longtime Rochester attorney and prominent civic leader, died Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Four Seasons Retirement Center in Columbus, his home for the past two years. He was 96 years of age. Mr. McCarty was born in Huntington Sept. 26, 1898, during the presidency of William McKinley and thus lived to see 17 other men occupy the White House. He had been a Rochester resident since the age of six. A practicing attorney in Rochester for 55 years until his retirement in Aprl, 1993, Mr. McCarty compiled a long and distinguished record of civic leadership. In recognition of the latter the Rochester Chamber of Commerce presented him with its Communty Service Award in 1973. His involvement in government and civic activities encompassed many spheres. He was elected Fulton County prosecuting attorney three times and for 25 years was attorney for the Fulton County Board of Commissioners. As attorney for the Fulton County Drainage Board he helped design the Mud Creek drainage system. At various times during his legal creeer, he was attorney for every one of the county's eight townships. In civic affairs, Mr. McCarty was a City Councilman for five years in the 1930s and during the next decade served two terms on the Rochester City School Board, four years as its president. He Also was a member of the Fulton County 4-H Fair Board. For many years Mr. McCarty was involved in Boy Scout leadership activities and for his achievements there the Three Rivers Council granted him the Silver Beaver Award, its highest citation for Scout leaders. A 1915 graduate of Rochster High School, Mr. McCarty was a member of the school's first baseball team in 1914 that played in a Wabash Valley League with Huntington, Bluffton and North Manchester. After graduation he went to work for the Rochester Bridge Company as a purchasing and sales agent. With the onset of hard economic times in the early 1930s, he followed the advice of his step-father, Charles C. CAMPBELL, and studied for admission to the bar. Mr. Campbell, incidentally, was Indiana's oldest practicing attorney when he died here at the age of 95 in 1963. Mr. McCarty was past president and the only surviving charter member of the Rochester Kiwanis Club, which was organized in 1929. A fervent golfer, he played the game into his 90s before an injury forced him to give it up. Mr. McCarty was a member of the First Presbyteruan Church which he served as trustee and elder. He also belonged to the Elks Lodge, Mizpah Shrine of Fort Waye, the Rochester Masonic Lodge and the Fulton County Historical Society. He was a member of the American, Indiana and Fulton County Bar Associations. His wife, who died in 1968, was the former Henriyetta WARD, whose family was one of Rochester's earliest settlers, arriving in 1831. He is survived by a son, Ward McCARTY, Edinburg, grandchildren and great-grandchidren. A son, John [McCARTY], preceded in death April 28, 1978. Last rites will be conducted Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Zimmerman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Sue BURTON officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Murray McCARTY, 97, 1200 Pontiac St., died at 1:55 p.m. Sunday at Four Seasons Retirement Center, Columbus, where he has resided for the past two years. He was born in Huntington to John A. and Grace MURRAY McCARTY. On Sept. 9, 1921 in St. Joseph, Mich., he married Henriyetta A. WARD, who died on Nov. 23, 1968. He was an attorney for 55 years in Rochester, retiring in April of 1993. He was a 1915 graduate of Rochester High School, and a member of the Rochester First Presbyterian Church, last surviving charter member of Rochester Kiwanis Club, South Bend Scottish Rite, Fort Wayne Shrine Club, Rochester Masonic Lodge No. 79, Rochester Elks and Moose Lodges, and Fulton County Bar Association. He was a former Rochester School Board member and president, former president of Three Rivers boy Scout Council and recipient of the Boy Scout Silver Beaver Award, former State GOP Finance Chairman, a three-term Fulton County Prosecutor, and former Fulton County attorney. He attended Purdue University and was a member of the John Purdue Club. Surviving are one son, Ward A. McCARTY, Columbus; seven grandchildren; four great-grandsons; and one niece, Mrs. Garry (Zanna) DANIELS, Rochester. Precedng in death were one son, John M. McCARTY, who died on April 28, 1978; and one sister, Mrs. Ruth DAVISSON. Services will be at 1:30 Thursday at the Zimmerman Family Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Rev. Sue BURTON officiating. Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and after 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
