Jack was born August 22, 1949 in Hebron, NE, to Loetta (Mahaffey) and Walter Swanson; he was the youngest of their two children. He attended Springfield Country School until his graduation in 1967. Not long after, he enlisted in the Navy on June 21, 1968, on the U.S.S. Edson as an engineer and fireman. Jack was honorably discharged on March 2, 1970. Jack married, Georganna “Jan”, on October 17, 1970 at the Omaha Holy Cross Lutheran Church, and to this union, four children were born—James, Jason, Jack Jr., and Jeanne. Jack had a strong passion for fishing and could often be found sitting by a body of water, with a tackle box full of his fishing necessities and a tub of worms. He enjoyed watching and reading westerns, especially movies and television shows involving John Wayne. Playing chess was another fun past time he enjoyed, and could often be found at the kitchen table, teaching someone the game or challenging veteran players. Other activities he found enjoyable were playing cards; eating cheese with his family; sitting outside, enjoying the weather and conversing with others; wood working; telling stories; and teaching his kids and grandkids various skills, such as driving. With Jan by his side, they could often be found sitting outside listening to the rain or taking long drives everywhere and anywhere. They also loved trucking around the country and just enjoying the outdoors from the comfort of a porch swing. Throughout his life, Jack’s primary job was as a truck driver, but he also served as a mechanic at various times. Jack and Jan moved from Omaha to a farm outside of Chester in 1994, before moving to a quaint house in Byron, NE, and then spent their remaining years in Mankato, KS, until Jan’s death in 2010. Jack continued to reside in their Mankato home until he became ill and spent his final days at his daughter’s home in Deshler, NE. He passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2017, surrounded by his family. Survivors include his kids: James (Christina) Swanson; Jack Swanson Jr.; and Jeanne Kulhmann; sister: Jean Shipley; grandkids: Ashley Swanson; Sean (Natosha) Swanson; Calvin (Megan) Collins; Michael Collins; Hannah Collins; Loetta Swanson; Cammy O’Dell; and Zoey Swanson; great-grandkids: Xadrian Gibson; Aubree Kidwell; Chasetin Collins; and Jayson SwansoHe is proceeded in death by his wife, Jan; parents, Walter Swanson and Loetta Bowman; in-laws, Bernard and Jeanne Watkins; son, Jason Brooks Swanson; and great-grandson, Jaydin Michael Swanson. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jan; parents, Walter Swanson and Loetta Bowman; in-laws, Bernard and Jeanne Watkins; son, Jason Brooks Swanson; and great-grandson, Jaydin Michael Swanson. Memorial services are Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 10 a.m., at the Kroll Funeral Home in Hebron, NE. Pastor Dennis Beckmann officiant, with military honors. Following the service, please enjoy a light meal with the family at the Byron Community Center, and share memories of Jack’s life. There is no viewing, as Jack wished to be cremated. Burial services will take place at the St. Paul Cemetery in Byron, NE. Honorary casket bearers will be the grandchildren. Memorials in care of family. Condolences may be left at www.krollfh.com.
