Read More	Jack Leland Besst August 22, 1928 - August 21, 2018 Jack Leland Besst passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, August 21st 2018 just one day shy of his 90th birthday. Jack was born in Meadow Grove, Nebraska to Fannie Casselman and Harry Besst and was the second oldest of four siblings. When Jack was sixteen, he and his family moved to Long Beach, California, and a few years later, Jack moved to Bakersfield, where he learned a trade in automotive repair. After moving to Bakersfield, Jack met the love of his life and his soulmate, Janiece, whom he married in 1949 and remained happily married to for almost 70 years before his death. After working at Bill McNamara's garage and later for Ring Oil Company as a mechanic, Jack began a 31 year career with the California Highway Patrol as a Motor Carrier Safety Specialist, first working at the weigh station scales on the Grapevine, and later inspecting school buses and trucks for various trucking companies in and around Bakersfield. Jack absolutely loved working for the CHP because it enabled him to meet many people who became life-long friends and whose friendships he valued very highly. The sheer joy Jack found in his work as well as being around people continued after his retirement from the CHP when he became a consultant for MP Environmental Services for the next 20 years of his life. When he wasn't working, Jack enjoyed fixing things around the house and spending time with his family and friends. When he was younger, the yearly deer-hunting trips on the Tejon Ranch with his friends and two brothers were something he eagerly looked forward to. And the family's summer trips to Carpinteria, at first staying at the Sunset Shores and later in the famous "family trailer" with Janiece and his children were the high points of his life. Later after Jack retired, he enjoyed taking the same family trips to the coast but this time with his grandchildren as well, sometimes staying in Carpinteria in the trailer or at the "beach house" in Cayucos. Jack also loved and cherished the trips he and Janiece took to Las Vegas with their close friends Larry and Pat Chaffin. Jack was a people person, and spending time with his family and friends meant everything to him. When he turned 70, Jack took up golf and enjoyed over 13 years of playing with the CHP golf group that met every Tuesday & Thursday. Jack was preceded in death by his mother and father, brother Delmar Besst, sister Donna Gaye Chellew, son Michael Besst, and nephew Richard Chellew. He is survived by his wife Janiece, brother Robert Besst (Barbara), his children Robin Davis (Keenan), Kelly Miller, Linda Bainbridge (Bob), and David Besst (Laura), nieces Kathy Majors (Gene), Cindy Besst, Polly Chellew, nephew Greg Besst (Donna), six grandchildren David Miles (Bonnie), Aaron Miles (April), Elizabeth Miller, Rebecca Miller, Claire Bainbridge and Andrew Bainbridge, and five great-grandchildren Emma Miles, Jackson Miles, Daniel Miles, Sammy Miles and Oliver Miles. A memorial celebration of Jack's life will be held in the chapel at Greenlawn Northeast on River Blvd, on September 8, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Published in Bakersfield Californian on Sept. 2, 2018
