Description	:	KIRST, JACOB—Jacob Kirst was born February 25, 1849, in Trier, Germany. He came to America with his parents when he was a lad of but seven years, in 1856. The family located in Sheboygan, Wis., where they remained seventeen years. In 1871 Mr. Kirst came to Nebraska, taking up residence in Fillmore county and homesteading the same year in Madison township. In 1878 Mr.... Read More	KIRST, JACOB—Jacob Kirst was born February 25, 1849, in Trier, Germany. He came to America with his parents when he was a lad of but seven years, in 1856. The family located in Sheboygan, Wis., where they remained seventeen years. In 1871 Mr. Kirst came to Nebraska, taking up residence in Fillmore county and homesteading the same year in Madison township. Thus he became not only one of the early pioneers of this portion of the state, but continued his residence in Fillmore county for the unusually long unbroken period of sixty-eight years. In 1878 Mr. Kirst was united in marriage to Johanna Schneider of Fairmont, also a pioneer of this district. There were born unto them eleven children, one departing life in infancy, and a second passing at the early age of nine years. The nine surviving children are as follows: Ella Wilson of Lodi, Cal, Etta Fox of Geneva, Nellie Wilson of Geneva, Jessie Laferty of Johnston, Col., Carl Kirst of Atascadero, Cal., Ray Kirst of Sterling, Col., Flossie Knox of Clay Center, Anna Brower of Geneva and Elmer Kirst of Lodi, Cal. At the Madison township homestead, Mr. and Mrs. Kirst lived and farmed for thirty-three years. They moved to Geneva March 5, 1905. Here they resided for thirty-five years. Mr. and Mrs. Kirst were permitted to live in happy wedlock for sixty years, and celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary a few months previous to Mrs. Kirst's demise, which occurred August 4, 1938. Mr. Kirst experienced but a few days of illness previous to his passing December 26, 1939, at the age of 90 years, 10 months, and 1 day. He was for many years a faithful member of the congregational church and attended worship on successive Sundays recently. All who knew him will remember him as a hard worker, loyal friend, good neighbor, faithful provider and companion, and, with all his years, still youthful in spirit and ambition. He is survived by six daughters and three sons as listed above, forty-one grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren. His friends numbered many from every walk of life. The funeral service occurred Thursday, December 28, at 2 p. m. at the Congregational church. Mrs. William Hinkle and Mrs. J. W. Hammond sang. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery.
