Read More	KIRST, JOHANNA—Mrs. Johanna Kirst (nee Schneider) was born on the 17th of October, 1860, at Muscatine, Ia. When she was but eleven years old, she came to Nebraska, making her home near what was later to become known as Sawyer, approximately nine miles northeast of Geneva. Mrs. Kirst enjoyed telling of the eventful trip from Iowa in a covered wagon. In 1878 she was united in marriage to Jacob Kirst. Theirs was destined to be a happy union and they lived together for a little more than sixty years. Mr. and Mrs. Kirst recently celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Eleven children were born to them, two of whom preceded the mother in death. The nine living children, six daughters, and three sons are as follows: Mrs. Ella Wilson, Lodi, Cal.; Mrs. Etta Fox, Geneva; Mrs. Nellie M. Wilson, Geneva; Mrs. Jessie A. Lafferty, Johnstown, Col.; Carl F., Atascadero, Cal.; Roy W., Sterling Col.; Mrs. Flossie B. Knox, Clay Center; Mrs. Anna F. Brower, Geneva; Elmer C., Lodi, Cal. Mrs. Kirst was in every sense of the word a pioneer, having lived in Madison township for sixty-five years and having shared the hardships of the early settlers and homesteaders. It was only last Christmas that she began to notice signs of failing health, though she never complained. She was confined to her bed for the last six weeks of her life, becoming weaker day by day. August 4, she departed this life in late afternoon at an age of 77 years, 9 months, and 18 days. Active until the days of her confinement, she will be missed in many a circle, particularly in the church and the woman's association, where she labored so faithfully these many years. She is survived by her husband, Jacob Kirst, the six daughters and three sons as mentioned, by two sisters and a brother, namely Mrs. Etta Schroeder and Mrs. Frank Bradley, both of Geneva, and Henry Schneider of Fairmont. She is also survived by forty-one grandchildren and thirty-two great grandchildren. The funeral service was held at the Geneva Congregational church at 2:30 p. m. Sunday and was conducted by Rev. John P. Hohnstein. Music was furnished by a male quartet composed of Merritt Donisthorpe, Howard Hamilton, Guy Brown, and Kenneth Helsey, with Mrs. Vera Waring at the organ. They sang "In the Garden," "No Night There" and "Rock of Ages." The tribute of the pastor was based on the words, "I have fought a good fight, I have kept the faith, I have finished the course; henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness." The church was filled to capacity, a silent tribute to the memory of the departed. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. "Servant of God, well done. Rest from thy loved employ.
