Jacob Bales, one of the substantial members of Friends church for nearly a century, passed away after four years of suffering, on the morning of April 22. He lived a life that fully accorded with his profession. He will be remembered by those who know him best as one that made his Christianity cast a halo of light around him. Always ready in time of health to tell of some incident which showed the pleasure he found there was in Christianity. He was born in Washington county, Tenn., January 16, 1817, and died April 22, 1906, at the age of 94 years, 3 months and 6 days. He was of a long lived family, his father living to be 100 years, lacking 17 days. Jacob Bales was a birthright member of Friends church. He was married to Ruth Morgan, April 28th, 1838. They had a happy home together for nearly 63 years, when his wife was removed by death. He, with his family moved from Tennessee in 1860, just before the breaking out of the Civil war, and settled in the spring of 1861, in Lyon county, Kan. In 1871 he moved and settled in Johnson county Kan., where he lived until 1882, when he settled one mile east of Lawrence, where he remained until death entered his home and called the wife, and then the husband, from works to rewards. There were five children born to cheer the home, all of whom are living: William Bales and Rachel C. Woodward of Lawrence; David Bales of Colorado Springs; Catherine Johnson of Earlham, Ia., and Carter Bales of Wichita.
