Mr. Winkleman was in extreme poor health for the past year and while his death was not unlooked for it yet came as a surprise. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Baptist church, in charge of the G. A. R. and Sons of Veterans, the services were conducted by the Rev. George Susher and pastor of the church. the remains were laid to rest in the Evergreen Cemetery. Jacob Winkleman was born in Gravenhausen, Bavaria, Germany, June 1st 1825 and died January 26 1913, being at the time of his death 87 years, 7 months and 25 days old. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Buzer of Bessel, Switzerland July 12th 1870 at West Point, New York. He was the father of 16 children, eight daughters and eight sons. Captain Winkleman was a civil war veteran, serving 28 years in the United States army. He was stationed at West Point, New York, and was in many battles during the civil war. After the war he came to Sherman county and took up a homestead eight miles northeast of Loup City. He moved to Loup City in 1894 and lived here the entire time, with the exception of being at the soldiers home for several short periods. In the time he lived in Loup City, he served in the capacity of baliff of the court nearly the entire time, and only resigned this position the past few years on account of ill health. He was acquainted with the history of Sherman county and could recall most any incident worthy of mention, that had happened here the past quarter of a century or more. His taking away from our midst removes one who had many friends and few enemies. The sympathy of the community goes out to the wife and children of the deceased. The Times-Independent - Jan 30 1913
