"Jacob Newton Greenlee, son of William and Sophia Greenlee, was born in Mason County, West Virginia, February 12, 1853, and died at the family home two miles west of Mason City, Nebraska, Tuesday evening, April 19, 1932. He was 79 years, 2 months and 7 days of age when death claimed him. He was married to Rosetta C. Amsberry at Arbuckle, West Virginia on March 25, 1874. They moved to Iowa two years later, coming to Custer County, Nebraska in 1880 and homesteaded nearthe present town site of Mason City. They have continued to make Custer County their home, with the exception of about eighteen months spent in Missouri. Mr. and Mrs. Greenlee were the parents of five children, three of whom, Anna, Freddie and Lucius, died in 1886. The two living are Mrs. Lucy Elison of Mason City and William F. Greenlee of Oshkosh, Nebraska. Besides the bereaved widow, who has been the companion of the deceased for 58 years, and the two children, there are also eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three brothers, Henry, Gideon and Charles; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Riffle, all living in West Virginia. There are also numerous other relatives and the old friends and neighbors who mourn the passing of this highly esteemed pioneer of Nebraska. Mr. Greenlee was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church of Cozad, and Elder W.C. Craig of that church delivered the funeral sermon. The remains were laid to rest in the plat of his own choosing in Enon Cemetery on the old Amsberry homestead. A large congregation of friends and neighbors from all parts of the country assembled to pay their last respects and solemnly followed the mortal body to its last resting place."
