Jacob John Weisbrod, Sr. was born July 5, 1818 at Reilingen, Baden, Germany. He married his first wife, Anna Catherine Schneider, January 26, 1843, in Reilingen. Anna and twin children born of this marriage, died in Germany. Jacob married his second wife Christina Katherine Vogele, September 3, 1845, in Reilingen. On July 24, 1846, Peter John was born to this marriage. In 1847, Jacob, Christina, and Peter came to America. On board ship Peter (about one year old) contracted smallpox. Sharks followed the old fashioned sailboat after the discovery of smallpox aboard ship. The rough sailors wanted to throw Peter overboard, to halt the epidemic. Christina convinced them to let her be isolated in a cabin with Peter for the remainder of the trip and, in this way, saved his life. Both parents were in their middle twenties when they started the trip. After a six-month journey, the parents landed in Pekin, Illinois with $24 of their savings still in hand. With this amount the father purchased a horse and cart. Moving near to Washington in Woodford County, Illinois, he began farming, plowing his corn with one horse, up one side of the row and down the other, cutting his small grain with a cradle. Prosperity followed hard work, toil and privations. Land was cheap and the poor immigrant began to acquire property. Meanwhile his family had increased and by 1868 six children were born, all boys but one. Two boys died in infancy. By this time the family owned 200 acres of good Illinois soil. But there was cheaper land to the west in the rising state of Iowa, so a few years later Mr. Weisbrod sold his Illinois land and moved to what is now Fenton Township in Kossuth County. In 1875 Jacob and Christina and their family came to Iowa. Raw prairie land could be bought from $5 to $15 an acre. His children, some with homes of their own, followed him and settled in the same vicinity. According to the book "History of Kossuth County" by Benjamin F. Reed, L.L.B., Vol. 1, 1913 "The John Newel family came to Kossuth County in 1874 and settled on the southwest quarter of 9, and Peter and Jacob Weisbrod the next year arrived and located upon the southeast quarter of 19. Jacob Weisbrod, the father of Peter and Jacob, came in 1876 with his other son, Michael and located upon the quarter adjoining on the north. They built a good size house directly south of Fenton. The material was hauled by wagon across the prairie by wagon with oxen from Algona. For some years the family met with many hardships. They drew grain for feeding a distance of 30 miles. Prairie hay furnished their fuel when chilly blasts of winter swept the bleak prairies. Their building material had to be hauled from Algona and was a difficult undertaking when roads were few and poor. Their mail was received once a month. Severe blizzards tried their souls in winter and crop failures discouraged them in the summer. Christina died August 9, 1877. She was buried on the southeast corner of the farm. Jacob Sr. donated the land for the Methodist cemetery. Christina was the first person buried there. The widower married Marie Hinners on October 17, 1877 and to them were born five boys and two girls. The entire family lived in or around Fenton. The men took an active part in Community affairs and nearly all were strong Methodists. Among the men you could expect farmers, stockmen, grain dealers, lumbermen, merchants, college students and politicians. According to Kossuth County Land Record, on February 22, 1883, Jacob Weisbrod purchased 160 acres of land from the Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul Railway Company for $800. It is described: "Kossuth Co—the Northeast quarter of Sec. No. 19 in Township 97, Range 30 West of 5th P.M." This is the farm they lived on at the south end of Fenton.
