Died in a Short Time James Evans, night fireman at the water works, died yesterday morning at his home, corner of Mississippi and Elliott streets, as the result of taking a tablespoonful of carbolic acid. Mr. Evans and his wife were getting ready to attend the Christmas services at the church, when he went to take a does of medicine which he had lately secured from a physician. The medicine was in a dimly lighted closet, which also contained a bottle of carbolic acid used by Mr. Evans for cleaning his hands. Mr. Evans poured out a tablespoonful of the deadly acid and swallowed it. No sooner had the poison burned his lips that he realized what he had done and rushed out of the house to get a doctor. He ran a short ways and fell, and told a man who came to his side to call the first physician he could get. Mr. Evans then ran home and fell as he entered the door. Neighbors came to his assistance and carried him to bed, where he died before the doctors arrived. Mrs. Evans was present and witnesed the terrible death of her husband. Her grief was pitiful and no tears came to her relief. Mr. Evans was a strictly hardworking young man, who stood wellin the community. Although but 23 years old he had been married about four years and leaves a wife and child. Mrs. Evans was formerly Miss Houdyshel.
