Western Ave, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, who died Friday in a local hospital, will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Home. Mr. Anderson was born February 15, 1894, in Praesto, Denmark. He came to the U.S. at the age of 15 and as a young man served in World War I. He married Esther Everett in Omaha, Nebraska, on April 3, 1930, and that same year settled in Sioux Falls. He was employed by the Sioux Falls school district in maintenance until his retirement in 1964. Survivors include the widow and a daughter, Margaret Anderson, San Francisco, California. James was one of a group of men who were drafted on April 26, 1918 and told to report to Milbank, SD before being transported to Camp Funston, in eastern Kansas. They received training for about 3 weeks before being transported to Camp Mills, NY. They boarded the troop ship HMS Adriatic on 6/4/1918 which took them to Liverpool, England. Eventually they crossed the English Channel to Le Havre, France. The Company was gassed on 8/7/1918 near Flirey, France. On September 12, 1918, James and my grandfather, were part of the St. Mihiel Offensive which reduced the St. Mihiel salient. My grandfather was severely wounded on 9/14/1918. James Anderson was severely wounded on 11/5/1918 during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive with less than a week left in the war. Neither man returned with the 355th Infantry, but more likely on hospital ships some time during the spring of 1919. This info provided by Bryan Anderson. The following newspaper clipping was sent to Paul Everett by Bryan Anderson on March 12, 2018: April 26, 1918 Thirteen more Grant county boys departed from here last Friday for Camp Funston, to begin military training. Originally there were twelve called but James Anderson, who has been working on the farm for Thomas Hicks, waived his serial number and went with the others. Harry Beighler, who registered in this county but has been at Beatrice, Neb., for some time, did likewise and has gone from there to Camp Funston. While in Milbank during Friday the draft boys were entertained by a committee of the Loyalty League appointed for the purpose, and made to feel that the home folks are interested in them and they are not going to be forgotten by Grant county people. He remained with Gunder throughout their military careers from being drafted to serving in Company B, 355th Infantry, 89th Division as a private first class. J. Anderson survived being gassed on August 7, 1918, and the St. Mihiel Offensive, but he was severely wounded on October 26, 1918 during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive by being hit in both thighs by machine gun fire with only a couple of weeks left in the war. J. Anderson was a farmer by trade. He married Esther Marie Everett on April 3, 1930, in Omaha, NE, and had one daughter Maggie. They would eventually both serve in Company B, 355th Infantry, 89th Division. I'm aware the draftees gathered in Milbank, South Dakota on this date and then were transported to Camp Funston, which is in eastern Kansas. So they would have arrived at Camp Funston perhaps a couple of days later in late April. They would receive basic training at Camp Funston for about 3 weeks. They left Camp Funston on May 22, 1918 for Camp Mills, New York. They boarded the HMS Adriatic on June 3, 1918 and set sail on June 4, 1918 for Liverpool, England and arrive about 10 days later. After more training and rest, they crossed the English Channel and landed in LeHavre, France. They would then board a train for the Reynel Training area, about 50 miles from the front. On or about August 3, 1918 the 89th Division moved near the front to relieve the 82nd Division. Almost immediately, they sustained a gas attack near the town of Beaumont, France during the night of August 7/8, 1918. It doesn't appear Company B was seriously affected, but Company A sustained about 30 deaths. On September 12, 1918 both your father and my grandfather were part of the St. Mihiel Offensive, which flattened the St. Mihiel bulge. Both James and Gunder were positioned near Flirey, France. American artillery bombarded the Germans starting at 1:00 am and fired about 1 million shells. At 5:00 am, on a rainy, cloudy day, the 355th went "over the top" and started working their way through the Bois du Mort Mare (Mort Mare forest). On September 14, my grandfather was severely wounded by machine gun fire while aiming his rifle. He was hit in both elbows and a crease was put into his helmet. That was the end of the war for him as he would eventually would end up on Base Hospital #13 in Limoges, France. You father would go on to fight in the Meuse Argonne Offensive where he was severely wounded on 11/5/1918, the deadliest day of the war for Company B, 355th Infantry where six members of the unit died. So, your father was lucky to survive the day. The war would end six days later. I've attached a photograph of Company B, 355th Infantry, 89th Division. Perhaps you are able to identify your father.
